I was playing in my pub league poker tournament yesterday. The blinds are 25-50 and we started with 10000 chips i had a little over 11000 chips. I was on the button with A4 SUITED DIAMONDS I DECIDE TOO CALL SB CALLS AND BB CHECKS the flop goes rainbow 5-4-j the sb checks the bb bets out 150 utg calls fold i decide to call because the player in the bb sometimes bets with air the sb folds. the turn comes o k of diamonds the bb then bets out with650 in the pot bets out 300 utg calls i decide to just smooth call with a pair and a flush draw. So on the river the 4 hits the board. The bb bets out 1600 the utg calls now i have trip 4 with a a kicker a very great hand. i decide too re raise too 3500 hich leaves me with 5100 chips the bb then decides to put me all in for my last 5100. Now im in a big time tank what would u do? pt 2 in a few days.

I would have flat called the river bet. It is possible that BB or UTG1 has 55, JJ, or even kk. Most likely not but I wouldn't want to risk my whole tourney on it. So, I would fold and use my 100x BB to rebuild my stack since it guarantees I'm still in the tourney.

I flat call the river. Just to save some chips. The only hand that is shoving vs your raise is probably either one that has you beat or an all out busted draw. Guess you have to decide which one it is.

Limped pots are dangerous, you don't know what they have.

Don't raise in this spot unless it is for value (i.e. the nuts)

You also lose to J4, 54, K4, all of which are very possible from the blinds with an unraised pot.

Next time raise the button in an unopened pot.

I agree with just calling the river bet instead of raising only hand shoving this early has you beat and no hand that is behind is just calling except for maybe a weaker 4. What did you end up doing and what did he have if you were able to find out

Next time raise the button in an unopened pot.

Not necessarily bad advise anyway but UTG actually called the blind. The OP failed to include that in the pre-flop play discription.

Flat the river. Since you didn't, I would now fold. You have a lot of chips left so no need to just put it in and hope he has nothing or trips with a poor kicker.

was it a free roll tourney? we have those here. i prob. would have called if it was a free roll. a money buy in, i'd prob would have folded. it's tough to lay down trips but if it means being hurt, with low trips like those it's tough to call IMO

studaddy. hello man. with all due respect, this tip will help you up your game.

You shouldnt make your decisions based on what the buy in of the tourney is. You should be making the same decisions whether your playing a 1000 dollar buy in or a freeroll. right decisions are right decisions always.

you get my drift?... cause if you'd call in a free roll but fold in a 200$ buy in then what your saying is that you would play it differently??? that doesnt make sense. like which move do you think is the correct EV+ move and why. the buy in price of the tourney is not a valid reason.

just sayin. cause if your playin with" scarred money", your not going to be making the right decisions apparently.

Yeah in a pot I raised I think Im calling all but the tightest of opponents here. 55 would almost be the only hand that I was scared of. As played the BB can have any of the hands that scare you so make the safe fold n salvage your equity you still have the tourney barring specific reads or history. Obv flatting the first bet is optimal in hindsight. The blinds hands in unraised pots always make for very scary non standard situations.

thats tough. i'm guessing you called and since you want us to analyze it, he had you beat. like everyone said, you shouldve just called the river. i put him on 55s.

yes i would play them differently in different situations..not every situation is the same however my main point was...if it is a free game, you can see the result and then analyze your decision with no money being lost. with money on the line however, it's a decision based on several factors...your stack ect..it all depends on the situation IMO.

well here is part 2. After tanking for about 10 min or so i decided too fold ny trip 4s with an ace kicker after i showed my hand . the player in the bb showed he made a full house withh 4s over jacks. lost half of my stack and couldn't recover from it as i was out of the tournament early.
