What should my ITM % to be profitable long term?

My ITM % is currently 15. I'm just wondering if thats a good or bad number. I'm not scared to make a play near the bubble and bust so im sure that reflects on the number a bit. For the most part I play to make a deep run. Over the past 4 years Ive deposited $100 and ive cashed out about $1500. But alot of that was from a second place finish in "the big 2" tourny where I cashed for just over 1400. I know I have been profitable, but in the long run does 15% cut it? oh.. and I play mostly all MTT with pretty big fields.

It's a pretty good number, but if you min cash each time you pass the bubble (which you probably don't), then you are losing money. Another accurate stat is the ROI (Return On Investment) which you probably already know. Or to put it in other words, it depends where you cash in the money jumps, not how many times you cash. Big fields have high variance. You can't really say much unless you have a huge sample.

I don't know the answer, but my gut is that if you are about double the average player, that is good. usually 10% of the field is paid, so the average player should make the money 10% of the time. so I'd be shooting for in the neighborhood of 20%.

My own stats: my total ITM% for all tournaments is 31.1% including many STTs. with ROI of 11.21%
for MTTs my ITM% is 25.65% with ROI of 27.81%
for large MTTs my ITM% is 22.5% with 45.77% ROI.

I don't know if that is good or not, but I'm happy with it. I don't know what we're really shooting for on ROI %, but I figure that it is better than the average return in the stock market...so seems fine with me.

Does anybody have any informed opinions on what a good ROI is?

Pretty sure that's around standard. (10-15%)

In lower buyin tourneys (micro) it'll likely be higher (15-23%)

(for SNG/STT winning players are typically 38-41% ITM)

Railing a friend's table right now on Stars. A $5buyin & down to final 75 or so.
7 of 9 are winning players, some with ALOT of volume (15,000+ tourneys) & decent total profit for a few (+$15k to +$145k)

Here's a rough idea of the ITM finishes (L% = Top 10%)

What your ITM should be seems a somewhat odd question. If you're satisfied with your ROI, how much does it matter what your ITM is? If you're not, then the basic solution is to improve your game. Your ITM may or may not change, but if you're more profitable, how much does that matter?

Fwiw, while there's high variance in big-field MTTs, it may be a concern that if you take away your one big cash, you've barely broken even.

well I am satisfied with my ROI, I play pretty much lowest stakes I can for the most part, and im up about 1400 on stars. I was just trying to gauge if the ITM rate was decent. Didn't really think about the ROI part.
