Skill, the number of tournaments played, all this, of course, is very important. But luck plays a significant role. Without a certain share of luck, no tournament can be won. The same professionals like Negreanu, Ivy, Helmut cannot win several tournaments in a row! you can’t refuse them skill !!!

To win tournaments you need to be willing to die, when odds are in your favour. There has been a thread in this forum, where numerous people wanted to fold QQ preflop to a mini-raise, because it was on the bubble. And there has been another thread, where someone actually folded AA, because multible other players were all-in, and he did not want to bust in one of the first hands of the tournament.

Patience, luck, and the willingness to gamble in a smart way. Without gamble there is no future. Who said that?

Skill and Experience

Skill and experience will allow players to win more tournaments.

My opinion is that tournament play is all about exploiting your opponent's mistakes. They limped or didn't raise enough or checked without betting.

As the blinds go up so should your bets.

As one approaches the money it is a mistake to go all in and put yourself at risk with a stack that has no fold equity - over and over....you will likely be knocked out before the money.

These are just a few examples of how experienced players play tournaments.

Good luck !

I think the three main traits would be hand selection, aggression, and being able to read opponents (not physically necessarily because we play online but being able to deduce their range from their actions). Hand selection also takes care of a big part of the game which is knowing the power of position and also patience. I do like what Fundiver said as well as you have to be willing to die. That is a big weakness of mine but it is very important to go deep in a tournament.

if you want to be a successful poker player you need to be confident. It is not about convincing yourself that you will always win and never make mistakes. Instead, you need to cultivate in yourself the belief that you are able to correct your mistakes and that you have the ability to improve. If you believe you can improve and persevere in your preparation, you will also increase your confidence.

Most tourney players stick with hand charts and dont risk their stack unless they have a huge hand.

It's skill, sure you need some luck at the final table to close the deal. But when you see good tournament players, they're consistent. Also, the variance is a test of will, great players are in-the-money in MTT's 20%-30% of the time. So they lose 70% of the time. Tournaments can be very profitable long-term because of the ROI when you run deep. You gotta manage a bankroll and balance emotion too but that's a whole nother thing.

The best players have a solid grasp on math and creativity. GTO and exploitative. Book smarts and street smarts. Call it whatever you want, but simply put I think the best poker players are both right-brained and left-brained. And as a player, when you bet in such a way as to manipulate your opponent into doing exactly what you want them to do, well there’s no greater feeling. It’s like the miniaturized version of pulling off an elaborate heist

All great answers - I'd also add persistence and drive/motivation beyond winning money, although that is a great motivational goal to pursue as long as it is in a controlled manner.

time, awareness, patience, and the right temperament. play according to how each table dictates and don't force hands.

not patience but discipline and a deep and correct understanding of variance, MTTs are a high variance format its normal to lose for months BUT you may never win if you are just bad so first you must be a winning player so the first step is improving your game.......

Experience and skills are of course needed, but without proper Bankroll managment, a ton of patience and piece of mind they are almost useless imo, unless you're hoping for a bink. Putting in a ton of volume to beat the variance is of course super important too.

theres so many factors that decide a good game in a tournament lol, i can say sometimes it depends about folded hands more than the calls but its hard to tell. skills and experience ofc plays a big role but sometimes a bit of luck helps more than a new player could imagine.
