Tournament overlay is when a poker site guarantees that a specific tournament will have a minimum prize pool. The number of buy-ins from the registered players normally makes up the amount of the prize pool. How a tournament overlay occurs is that the tournament will fall short of meeting the necessary buy-ins that make up the guarantee and in return, the poker room offsets the loss by kicking in the additional amount. That's actually nice to have when entering tournaments.

Yea, I like when there is overlay. That doesn't happen to many guaranteed tournaments nowadays. People see the word "Guaranteed" & jump all over it & you'll have tons of entries that exceed the guaranteed prize pool.

It's nice to play those types of tournaments when there is overlay. Less people & still same amount of guaranteed money. Rare these days on most sites.

Shame, you missed your chance to expand on the answer!
There is another way that a tournament could have an overlay.

Our CC Buy-In Tournaments are a perfect example where there is typically $50 or $100 added (overlay) on the tourney which, although it's relative value goes down with more entrants, never diminishes or disappears like a guarantee type overlay can.
