The ideal ITM finishing distribution for a 50/30/20 9-man STT is said to be 1>3>2, and it probably is something you want to consider alongside the ITM % itself to get a better picture of how you're doing. The reasoning seems intuitive enough: placing ITM is your first priority because of the huge
equity difference between that and placing OOTM (this may be less applicable to MTTs, where you generally want to aim higher than a min-cash from the get-go), but once ITM, you want to up your aggression and place 1st as frequently as possible (even if oftentimes at the expense of coming in 3rd instead of 2nd) because the difference between 1st and 2nd is more significant than between 2nd and 3rd.
I try to bear these general principles in mind when playing my staple game of the moment (6-man super turbos), and thus far I have a healthy ITM placement rate and my firsts are outnumbering my seconds by about 3:2. So far so good, but I'd like to grind a couple k more games before making too much of these numbers.
