I notice that a lot of players at the stakes I play like to underbet the flop and then overbet the turn when they are the pfr.. This line baffles me because I've never seen it in cash games and I don't think I've seen it in tournaments on tv or on YouTube or anything, it seems to only happen in lowstakes..

What do you guys think this line means? I see it most on drawing boards. I'll try to find an actual example later tonight, but lets say villain opens for 3.5bb pre and we call, heads up now. Flop is TJ5rainbow. They bet 1/3 pot. We call hoping to complete our straight. Turn is blank, lets say a 2, they bet the pot.. We fold. Is this play a bluff most of the time? Every time I've run into it, there's no way I can justify calling.

What do you guys think? Do you ever run into underbet on flop and overbet on turn? Have you ever been able to justify calling? Does this play mean a strong hand or a bluff?

Seems like a strong play that indicates a real hand. Either that or they realize that since you did not raise on the flop they can fire big bet on turn to get you to fold, but I honestly think they have to be strong. Maybe they are value betting on flop with strong hand and on they turn they get greedy and think you will call bigger bet.

I'm kind of leaning towards a bluff.. Like they are trying to get a little extra value before getting me to fold.. But you are right too, it could just be someone spazzing out when they have top set or something and dont know what to do with it.

Do you think this would be an effective bluff? Like I'm wondering if this is a line that I should be adding to my arsenal at any time, if its prevalent for a good reason or if its prevalent just because the players are bad

I think it's definitely something to consider adding to the arsenal. It's made me fold marginal hands on multiple occasions. The play looks really strong IMO

Maybe ill give it a couple tries in the 1$ sng then. I think as a bluff it depends on a blank turn though. Maybe better as a semi bluff if I'm on a draw..

Edit: Although now that I'm thinking about it, I think the math works out a little better for 1/3 or 2/5 size on flop and then 2/3 or 3/4 size on turn... I think that still looks really strong, but at a much better price...

Edit2: Or maybe just half pot - half pot.. Lol, I think I'm over thinking it now.. This is what happens when I'm board at work and thinking about poker

.... Thought about it more, this is just a terrible play any way I think about it... But you're right, when facing this line from an opponent it usually means strength

Opponent might have a top pair or pockets.. and sense you drawing a strong hand so he wants you to fold or pay high for the draw..

Possibly, but why wouldn't he price me out on the flop with a 2/3 pot size bet

not always test rate is weak or empty hand . it may be the nuts . you can simply drag out the bank a small bet.

I think thees players are players who do the "continuation bet" even if they know they lost. The way i play against them is catching a good hand and reraise them . Even if articles in this forum say dont bet/call for information i would call when an uncertain situation appears and see for my self what is he trying ti do .
