Trouble with playing an average stack...

One problem I believe I have is playing an average stack. I feel like I do a good job with playing a short stack and feel like I do great with a big stack. But for some reason mid to late in tourneys I think I play an average stack horribly. Are there questions that I need to be asking myself when I'm faced with this situation? I mean I don't want to be one of these guys that tries to fold my way up the pay ladder. I want to be the guy that makes the final table and has enough chips to do some damage.
