Hi all, i am just curious as how most of you guys transition from early tournament play to mid to late tournament play, i always seem to have a roaring start, currently in 2 tournaments with over 110 BBs positioned (3/65) and (6/66) at the first break but i seem to leak chips and somehow find the blinds have overtaken me by the time the money comes around, i guess my main issue i think i have noticed is my transition from early to mid game, do you guys have any advice? I am thinking about tightening up my starting hands and only moving in on pots with the highest showdown equity hands but i am not sure if thats the best way either.

Any help is appreciated?

In MTT's we're talking strictly blind increase (not table count).....
in mid-stage I don't alter much. I still play somewhat tight. Take smaller risks with bet size and opponents. In other words, not tackling the guy in the hot seat with 6x my stack holding 7-2 os. I still try to exploit any table advantage I could. If my stack size is critically low this doesn't apply of course, it wouldn't matter the stage in that case.

In late stages, especially when tables get short I open my range accordingly. I also step up the aggression. More often than not, Ax suited pre is a lot stronger vs 3 players than it is with 8-10. AJos or other hands like pocket pairs are usually strong too. In the late stages if you can pick up the blinds and antes they are usually a great amount; plus, you NEED those blinds and antes to survive orbits. You must start gambling more that you have the best hand pre and that your bets will cause folds or calls with weaker hands.

When you accumulate chips early, one of the keys is to use them judiciously through selective aggression. Open raise more, especially when you have position and/or against opponents who are playing tight. But be prepared to fold when people play back at you, especially the tight ones. Losing 2.5x or 3x when you have a big stack is nearly meaningless, while seeing flops after calling 3bets when you're trailing your opponents' ranges is more likely to reduce your stack than to grow it.

Play more conservative after u get the big stack. Learn about seeing your stack in terms of M. Its a formula created by all time tourney pro Dan Harrington where you add the current BB, SB, and the antes for 1 time around the table and then divide your stack by that number. So if u have 12,050 and the blinds are 500/1000 w 80 ante that's 2220 every time around the table. That means that your M=5.4. To analyze this number correctly you basically look at it as M=20+ you have no reason to do ANYTHING out of line, 10-20 is safe, 5-10 you wanna start thinking about 3 bet shoving over late raises and people playing too many hands, and 5 or less is shove any decent hand to collect the blinds n possibly double up. Look it up and it will change the entire way you look at tournament poker.

This is exactly my transition in tounament play.
Although when blinds are lo I tend to see more flops and pick my spots to try to build chips.
As blinds continue to increase is when it is a good time to have good read skills.
If you know you can buy some pots and make moves to increase chips as well.

normally depends on the table, if you've a decent stack and its a loose table tighten up and wait for a good spot to win a big pot while stealing blinds now and then to keep your chip count up; if its tight, loosen up and steal more pots, make more bluffs at the right times its all about playing your opponents and their stack sizes at this stage!
