Kind of have two questions ......

I run a bi-weekly tournament where we have about 35 people that participate with each tourney having 20-30 people able to attend.

We keep track of points and run a year-long schedule including a mid-year tournament and year-end tournament.

We have a pretty good format I think.

We have a $45 buying at each tournament (except mid year and final are both $100 buyins) where $40 goes to the payout for the individual tourney and $5 goes to the year-end tournament pot.

We payout 45%, 25%, 15%, 10%, 5% for 20+ person tourneys and will go 50%, 30%, 20% on smaller 10-15 person tourneys.

I'm just wondering A) what input or suggestions people might give me for making our tournaments better ... and B) we are having some issues with people 'talking players into calling and folding' when the people talking are not even in the hand. How would you suggest we deal with that sort of thing?

Thank you for your time

It sounds like a great league with more than 30+ people showing up to each event!
For the people talking, I would make it a general rule that if you aren't in the hand you shouldn't be allowed to talk about the hand. I mean it is general courtesy, but some people still need to be told it.
And if you are tournament director, I would just make sure you are doing a good job of running the tournament in general. ie, if 1 table has 10 people and 1 table has 8 people, you make sure to switch one person from the 10 person table to the 8 person table to even it out. Also, narrow to 2 tables when you reach 20 people. etc.

Good luck

Sounds awesome. Just don't know how you improve on that except for the little extras - atmosphere (I love the home game I go - host has iPod playing some great music), food, drinks, bonus prizes (set of Harrington books for tonight's winner).

At the casino it just isn't even allowed to be talking about or even referring to a hand you are not in and the dealers are quick to shut it down. Usually with the cliche, "One person per hand, please." or the more direct, "if you are not in the hand please refrain from commenting on it."

If someone continues along that line and will not heed warnings then enforce penalties starting with:

Mucking their next hand (they cannot play in the next hand).

Mucking their hands for the next compete orbit (they cannot play in a hand until the Button comes back around to the guy who has it when the penalty was incurred).

Suspended from playing in the next tourney.

Suspended for 30 days.

Expulsion.

But I guess one key element of that is getting everyone (or 2/3 majority) to agree this is reasonable and warranted.

And are looking for more people? Tell us what city and you might be able to replace those jack asses pretty quickly
