Local Tourney: $1100 Buy-in. 1st pays 51k 2nd pays 29k Field of ~4200 (not relevant but a factor in the sickness lol).

Effective Stacks 47k (blinds 1500/3000/300)

Heads up at the final table and im in the small blind and look down at A8 off.
I make a standard raise. Villian has been Loose Aggressive for the whole hour that we've been heads up (intense battle lol) but knows when to pick his spots.
He re-raises me and i suspect he has a mid PP JTs KQs. I go over the top shove. he thinks and calls, showing 33.

Flop: 887

Dream Flop. already planning my trip to Italy lol

Turn: 5

River: 3

I almost Shit my pants. have never been so disgusted with a 29k win in my life (not my first win of that caliber, but the first one was taking first in a tourney)

Thoughts on what I couldve done differently??

just from my perspective maybe had you just flatted and got to the flop without committing all chips preflop, your villian may have felt that he was beat by the turn with the overcards on the board. he may have folded to some forceful betting. but it's hard to say when u r heads up like that because it takes soooo little to win a hand (by little i mean 33 is a made hand, where A8 is behind and needs to pair). sometimes those 3's are gonna feel like aces you know? he obviously thought u didn't have a pocket pair to call with 33 there and thought he was favorable to win.

idk with that kind of cash at stake... i wouldn't be putting all my money in preflop with Ahi hoping to win a race for the extra 15k... i'd be playing to see flops, and outplay my opponent post flop and let him make a mistake and capitalize on that. but even in that case had you played to the river with villian calling you down with 33... there's no way you're gonna put him on pocket 3s HU when the 3 fell on the river, and those trip 8s were gonna cost you no matter what.

with that said, congratulations on your 2nd place finish, and a nice cash at that! so you got unlucky on the river... it happens, shrug it off and keep playing solid poker. to survive a large field, like you did in that tourny, is a victory in itself, and you must have been playing solid 99% of the time!

Next time make sure the dealer mucks the remaining threes before running the board.

Easy game.

Yea i thought about flatting and trying to outplay him on the flop. maybe it was the whole 2-day grind that made me make that move, considering the tourney lasted 2 days roughly 28 hours of play. but nonetheless, other then a super sick beat on the river, not complaining about the money

If it's a field of 4200, with an $1100 buyin, how come first place is only 51k?? Even with a field of 400, this number seems really small.. Am I missing something?

theres no way you could have gotten away from that hand. u played it fast which i think was not the best decision but even if u min raised and he called,ud probably try to slowplay it so u dont scare him off so this looks like a situation that plays itself. cant get away from it .

Lol at blinds only being 1.5k/3k for a 4,200 runner 2 day tournament.

If everyone only started with 1,000 chips then average chips HU would be 2.1 million each

This kind of thing happens to me all the time.

I look at it this way I got lucky to get a good flop he had me before the flop and was still good at the end. I mean really he had you before the flop so you got lucky he should be mad. But hey he got lucky also so it worked out adzactly like it should have his 10% lead before the flop held. Its neat to see the back and forth like this but him winning is 10 percent more likely then him losing so what happened is what was supposed to happen.

Really DJ? NOTHING?

I suppose you are correct if you like shoving A 8 os vs a re-raise.

The possible hand range seems narrow. You don't suppose that he would have gone crazy with A rag too?
