I believe a big key to winning in tournaments is waiting out your cards when your getting bad hands constantly and being patient for the good hands to play......I'm not saying always fold that K6 or Q7 but when the blinds are at the 150 / 300 point I believe folding those types of hands is a must IF there not suited and depending on position......I know this might not be the same to extremely aggressive players but when I make it to final table I usually see the "Aggressive Players" go from chip leader or close to being in the first 3 people removed from final tables.......Idk if this is just in my experience or if I'm hitting the nail on the head!!! what is your input on this ?!

Badbeat against a FISH

I just lost all my stake (83 left in a 10$ buy-in tournament) to a FISH who was the chipleader in this stage with a stake of 655K (I had about 320K in 6th position)..
We were playin (5000/10000 ante 800) I was in the SB with AhKh, action folded to him in the CO and he just jamed !! Strange not ? So i didn't have other choices, i called.. He had Qc4c
Flop came 3h5h3s the turn was a Qd river 8d !!!!! I was in 6th position and now 0 :D .. how can I cross this.. im just in tilt!!

its true that we need to be patient and use the best hands possible. sometimes patience becomes a rare virtue when having bad hands all the time, but still a must. we must always think that unless you have a super monster hand, there might be a better hand on the table. just ensure you manage your stack very well.

The best hands arent always the best to play

i have learned over the years that raising on a mediocre hand such as J spade & 8Clubs, and usually having only one opponent, maybe two, without the Ace hitting on the flop, i find that i usually take the pot.

I think its a start, your on the right track. I can sit down and play by the book TAG and do fine in a tournament.

I think this is the bulk of poker players. TAG will allow for a lot of min cashes and a few decent runs when the cards go your way. The other times you are just going to be card dead or take a beat that ends your day.

To turn the corner and really be profitable/successful you need to adjust TAG to suit your style/comfort level/personality. There are many points in a tournament that you need to open your range and not just play "good hands" because many times they are hard to come by. A good example is the post about AK vs Q4. While not a good way to play the villain was 60/40 which is pretty close to a coin flip. Just about any 2 cards other than an A or K are 60/40. You are going to have to play these kinds of hands, live cards. Other wise we would all just sit and wait for AA or KK.:)

Yes, often it's about waiting and playing with good hands, but it also depends on your stack, the blinds and many other factors, it's also good to follow a little instinct, as you say do not always throw a hand that is not premium, this Well take the risk of coming in when you always feel comfortable and because you often wait for the good hand and: it does not arrive or it takes time to arrive and need to make chips

waiting around for premium hands will lose you lots of value. you need to generate a range based on how deep you are in the tournament and how many BB's you have at any time.

and yes, aggressive players usually do swing up and down in chips and get donked out of final tables in last even when they arrive their in first quite often. its probably best to tighten up at a final table a bit, even if the odds are in your favour. the pay jumps change everything

When playing online, does the software on various sites make a difference in playing style. The few sites we're allowed to play at in US seem really different to my playing experience.

Very sad ... Sadly, but it has happened to me.

Imagine this hand:

I had: :jd4::ac4:

He had: :kc4::10c4:

On the flop: :kh4::kd4::jh4::jc4::ah4:

He won with a Full House and I got into depression

ALWAYS LOSE

I did the exact thing in a 6.6 tourney.. I was 18th place out of 300 people and the Bigger guy at my table goes all in after i flop a two pair kings and 6s..... Im wondering what the heck the guy must have.... Next card is an Ace......

GUY HAD POCKET ROCKETS....... I LOSE IT ALL. he goes on to win the entire tourny...

Thats my two sense... I should have folded the dang K,6 in the beginning.

He was smart and did not raise the blinds. GOT ME GOOD

Depending on the type of tournament, this is not always possible. I've been in situations where I've gone like 10 orbits of the table without getting any strong hands. Even worse, when I did get something marginal like QTs, there would always be a raise and sometimes even a caller in front of me. Sometimes you just have to use your position and/or the fact that nobody has initiated action and play your sub-par hand like it's a premium one. Otherwise, you risk getting blinded away.

Patience is one of the most important "charisma" of a poker player. Like in a good hunter patience is very much need. Often it can reverse the course of your game!

I definitely agree with so many other players on an eight to ten player table. The river sure knocks out many, too.... Lots of risk, so I plan to remain more focused and patient...

One big problem of online poker is that it's almost impossible to always know your opponents range, since it's almost always different people. I like to play tight in the early stages of a tournament to get an idea of what they are playing with, so I avoid going all in pre-flop, except with AA/KK, maybe QQ/JJ, depending on the situation. Later I can open my range, always studying the situation, of course. Bad beats will happen, but it's part of the game, you have to be resilient about it.

I agree just partly. Of course patience is necessary. But in my opinion, you can't just wait for good hands, otherwise you will be blinded out soon. If you are just card dead, you need to play your position and your table image.

You should select some oponents where you can steal from at least the blinds. A further disadvantage of just playing your premium hands is, that you will become predictable for your opponents. So either they will fold to your raises or try to beat you with their drawing hands or in worst case with some crap hand.

You can do both. Stealing a few pots to bide your time till the larger hands lets you actually play it. I think the inital point was not "gambling" with larger pots with mediocre hands.

(I love using the work gambling as a negative when discussion poket...too ironic to pass up)

Tight player its always a bad player,you must be agresivebut good agresive player,you must know your opponents range from different pozitions and know how he is playing,if you only go with good hands and be a tight you going to lose chips for sure.....
