Remember the three move rule on whatever fancy move you try:

1st you get the benefit of the doubt.
2nd they comply incrediously
3rd they think you are lying.

Work on your poker face, don't show excitement, don't show fear.

Play the same game as if you playing online. No need to change up your game just because it's live.

Try and stay calm. I know when I played my first live game, I was a mess of nerves. I swear you could have picked up on it from a mile away. I tried to keep cool and after about 15 minutes the butterflies were gone.
This will eventually go away, at least it has for me.
Remember we ALL put our pants on one leg at a time. So, there is no difference between you and anyone else at your table.
Good luck and post your results here.

I played not too long ago my first live game. So I remember it very well.
Was small stake fairly friendly environment - although in a casino - $35 including fee. I actually did tell table mates that it is my first live game - and they were friendly and helpful. As far as the game itself...DO NOT be intimidated at all - and I totally agree - play the same as you usually do. Do not let any small detail - like chip handling or where you hold your hands - etc affect your play, and of course poker face is a must. But game play no need to change!

You don't even need to have a poker face. The majority of the players at the table, if not the entire room will trying to work out if Kings beat Queens. Seriously... the fish will be everywhere. Just try and pick up a hand and extract value from it. If someone raises, get out of the hand because they never bluff.

Nothing to be nervous about.
If you're even a half-decent micro stakes tournament player (online) you'll likely be one of the better players on the table.
Guaranteed you will be shocked by just how bad some of them are.

common live adjustment issues that come to mind:

pot counting: count the pot as it is being built in terms of BB. If the open raise is 3BB, and it gets 2 callers, know that it's 9BB. I wouldn't try to mess with tallying the pot once the dealer pulls it in.

don't watch the flop being dealt: look at the other players watching the flop

isolation: there are some truly bad players live that you can isolate and beat in almost every hand so give it a try

structure: the blinds usually rise very fast in live tournaments.

If Phil starts spewing curse words and insults at you for a hand you played, just ignore him and stay with your game. Also, don't get too chummy with Daniel, he's a wolf in sheeps clothing. And lastly, don't get hung up with Annies good looks, she will eat you up and spit you out before you could say "so, do you play here often". :D
But really now, the advice is sound, it's just that the players will have different names!

Practice memorizing your hole cards. The less time you spend studying your cards the more you can spend on the other people.

When the blinds go up should I become more aggressive or play the opposite of what I have been playing?

Could you give the tournament structure to us? starting chips and blind increases along with antes would be helpful.

Quite honestly though, how well you do is going to be almost completely luck. Most tournaments have fast blind increases and you're just going to have to pray that you get some nice hands. If not, shove the best looking hand you get and pray once you are down to around the 10-15bb mark.

Always wanted to play live. Let us know how it goes! I stick to micros online. All the live tourneys around town are too rich for my blood...

yeah dont get worried. my first game i was bricking it. happened to be in PH vegas.

ended up final tabling and went out with KK vs AA.

after a few games its like routine playing online.

i play best when i am relaxed and enjoying the table. live poker is a completely different game. high pairs are usually good. 2 pair will win you nearly every pot.

How is this any different to online?
people generally play worse live so just exploit what they do incorrectly

because there are generally less 'big' hands

very rarely do you see 2 monther hands up against eachother

its usually a battle of the pairs

There are just as many fish in the online tournaments. More than enough. I constantly see spew tards get huge stacks at the start poised to make a deep run who then donk it all off with second pair and stuff.

The tournament is 5 hours so how would you think the blinds would be? (The tournament is in the 19th so haven't got all the facts done yet.

Well that depends on the number of entries to be honest.

I'm going to play my first ever live poker tournament and I was wondering what some tips would be going in.

Go very aggressive in the Beginning showing your the King of the ring. Make bluffs 60% of the times for the 20 mins but sensibly.( lot of peeps afraid of losing early so they tend to fold ) After first 20 mins, Once if you have built your stack then play normal chilled out poker. After break play very conservative and show the table your a strict conservative player. Platter is set for your bluffs when blinds go up. Once blinds are high, Do not bluff the low stacks as they will go all in, Hit people in your chip range with big bluffs.

My strategy is risky but very effective. Out of 29 tournaments i have made 8 times to the final table.

Good luck.

I'd steer you away from this strategy... Plus what do you mean bluff 60% of "the times." Are you saying play 60% of hands? Or bluff 60% of the hands you don't have a pair on? This advice is also some of the sketchiest I've heard in a while...

Haha i agree with scourrge...almost all professional players encourage you to play very reserved at the beginning of tourneys.
Assuming that you have played a little bit of online poker and know the basic rules and probabilities (chance of hitting a flush, etc), the only main difference would be hiding your facial expressions, and seeing other peoples faces as well. Definitely watch some youtube videos about hiding poker faces, and trying to read other peoples poker faces

Honestly you could replace half the runners with chimps and your edge against the field would probably decrease. Just concentrate on playing tight and picking up good hands and value towning them.
