Tournament structures and playability

I think this topic is something somewhat overlooked in the poker community.

We as poker players must accept the element that chance plays in our outcomes, but that being said, it is also important that the games we are playing in provide an environment that reduces that element.

A big gripe I have with MTTs both live in online is their lack of playability, and feel my biggest weakness as a poker player is wasting my bankroll on tournaments with variance so high, that being a long term winning player is simply impossible.

Which brings me to my main point: how do you determine which tournaments are playable and which are not?

For example, a casino nearby me has a tournament with 15 minute levels and 7k starting chips. Another has 30 minute levels and 40k starting chips. It is quite obvious which of these give players more of an opportunity to succeed with good fundamental poker.

However I find that the online environment has few choices. ACR has some well structured tourneys, but the 10 minute level nightly tourneys on ignition leave much to be desired and become a shovefest very early on.

tl;dr- MTTs often have poor structures, which tourneys do you like to invest your bankroll into?

i focus on those where i have the best chance of profiting. just analyze your style and what you're good at and pick those. occasionally take shots improving but the bulk of your profit will be on certain games at certain times.

I on the contrary easier to play in tournaments MTT and S&G with levels of 3 minutes and the initial stack of 3000. In such tournaments quickly fly arrows and fools.

It very much depends on your playing style. Some people prefer deep stack tournaments with slow levels because this allows them to carefully select their hands and have more time for thinking and analyzes. Other people like the fast pace and aggression of the turbo or hyper turbo tournaments. Find what suits you best and stick to it.


Other important thing is to not be too attracted to tournaments with low buyin and high profit promised. Yes they look attractive but usually there are too many players in them and in MTT even if you take the correct decisions you will depend at least several times also on your luck for the end result. More players means more times that you need to be lucky to enter the money and more chances to be beaten even if you play well. In many cases tournaments which look much less attractive will allow you to get to the money more easily and more frequently.

You seemed to be looking for longer blind structures which are harder to find online. Most tournaments have gone turbo and are faster paced. Might have luck with some off the 45 or 90 SnG with 15 or 12 minute structure.

Usually I prefer MTT tournaments. In fact, I do not play cash games, because I always lose money in them. Most of all, I love the slow tournaments in which you can patiently wait for good cards.

I prefer the longer blind structure of MTT's but I also like to play sit'n' gos.
