I've been discussing tournament strategy with friends now for two years, and once you get past all the fluff, it seems everyone has their own style mixed with more hard-wired philosophies of the game that depicts the way they play. Since poker is SO situational and personal and very different from tournament to tournament, I wanted to throw out a few key categories and get everyone's one sentence philosophy as it relates to their style.
I'll start it:
Presence (live) - keep fairly quiet and observe at all times.
Early Tournament Rounds - sit back and watch for a few orbits, see how the cards are falling and then decide which strategy/style to incorporate focusing on chipping up early. Pot management is key.
Betting - keep it consistent (and leading persistent) and use it as a tool to put people to tough decisions to give you information on your next play(s).
Mid-tourney Rounds - do not call a lot of hands, either be in raising or re-raising.
Bubble Play - play to win and/or for the FT, not just the money.
Final Table - patience and opportunity.
Overall - do whatever you can to gather information and push people to give you valuable info to make good decisions and/or make them make bad decisions.
