I would say my poker strategy in a tournament is to play tight and play cautious in the beginning. I believe a tournament is based on survival. I've played alot of tourneys and some I've won, and some I lost. Bit once I got through the first 40 or 50 being eliminated in a 100 person tourney it got easier for me. If anyone has any better strategy I'm open for discussion on how to make my tournament game better. -roezillaa

If you are well done early in a tournament you must
dare to come along or rage, cool games do not pay in the long run.
If you get many chips in the beginning you have a bigger chance to go far in the tournaments, that's my experience.

Yeah I know what you mean, o was referring to playing tight. I hate not playing at all and folding every hand. You can't fold your way to a final table, but you can survive playing cautiously. Thanks for the advice man

I also play tight at the beginning of the tournament, it is not worth stealing blings or playing a lot hands, because the blings are very small. When the blinds are bigger, i increase the aggressiveness and the range of hands, steal blinds etc.
If you want to go far in a tournament you must play aggressive and risk, and do not be afraid of being eliminated.
Regularly if i have flush draw project or staircase project, i put all my chips on the table, it does not matter if the boat is small, i want it

Yeah definitely the way I would go about playing a tournament. Especially if the stakes are high. Normally I play tournaments with a buy in of around $35-$75 and first place ranges from around $1,000 and lower. I've never had a first place win, but I've had multiple top 5 or top 10 wins. I normally do better online but then again I seem to get shafted somehow on there too. I'll have a flush and someone picks up a boat. I hate when that happens haha

I like to limp in with suited connectors when the blinds are cheap and there are others limping in as well to make the pot worth it. Sometimes I get lucky and double up without risking much.

You got the basics down.

That's a good way to play. Tight at the beginning then open up your game toward the middle. If you have a good chips lead, you can push around when you get near the bubble. If you don't have such a good stack when you get near the bubble, you can opt to choose the optimal hands to start with. Personally, I don't like risking my tournament life near the bubble. I can always gamble after the bubble and chip back up. There are many ways to get through a tournament. You have to choose the one right for you. That is, the one that works the best. Cheers.

Everyone's style is different so what works for one person won't work for others. I personally disagree with playing "tight" early. I certainly wouldn't play trash but I'm not folding QJ, KQ, J10, or other marginal hands because I can win a big pot with a small investment. I do this because I'm confident in my post-flop play. I want to accumulate as many chips as I can early. I like to play a lot of pots, see a lot of flops, and this allows me to not be forced to play these types of hands later in the tournament for big pots.

Usually I would bust out in the bottom 20% or the top 20%+. I either bust out early which I'm okay with or I get deep into the money.

Honestly, since most people agree with you and say they play that way too, you know you're wrong. because you should be playing the opposite of everyone. So if everyone is tight early, you should be looser. (just saying...)

I agree with all of you, but I agree with proud2bewhack to a certain extent. I haven't played with any of the people who actually agree with me on here. Alot of the people I play with at the casino are regulars, and some of the time they play tight, and sometimes alot of them play aggressive right from the start. I don't like to risk my tournament life ever, like ever haha. But if I get KK or AA early on. I can't fold that, and if I lose with that I lose my mind haha. There's a million different strategies to play for tournaments. You kind of just have to feel out the way it's going early on and get in where you fit in. Steal a couple pots, bluff very little, or alot if you're really good at it. The games all about risk, sometimes luck, and half the time skill. Or alot of luck, however you see it haha
