Welcome to the Tournament Forum!

A brief summary of what should and shouldn't be posted here, so that we can hopefully keep having to move threads around to a minimum. Everyone needs to read this as it has been recently updated.

What should be posted here:

  • Any questions regarding specific strategies or strategic concepts relating to sng's and tournaments. This could be anything from asking about effective bubble play to asking about deep stack MTT strategy.
  • Questions and advice regarding tilt, managing your bankroll, table chat and other psychological type issues.
What should not be posted here:

Tell me how you can overcome fear,or tildes, when in a tournament pass deep. I start to worry and become more secret, when in theory it is necessary to the contrary more aggressive, as blinds grow.Clamped like that and can't play...

Should I be avoiding coin flips or shoves until later in the tournament. I find I try playing tight answer stronger in later and tighter in early position. But it seems to not be working that great. Any tips on how to last longer in tourneys.

I have a few ideas

You can practice everyday and keep getting to that level of the tournament more and more frequently. You can open 2 or 3 tables at low stakes and play the games with all the heart you can muster using every single rebuy/add on you can get. Take calculated risks and try to amass chips as hard as you can. When rebuy ends play TAG now. Get chips in good AND try not to ever play out of position with less than JJ until you are experienced (if ever) so your hand history shows you are telling the truth in that position 99% of times. This will allow you to sometimes steal a pot later on if you absolutely had to. Once approaching bubble(s) or in the money, unregister from tournaments that you signed up for additionally so you can focus on the ones running. Take about 5 minutes of deep breathing. Get in the moment. Watch now like a hawk for nervousness from players just like yourself. Try not to put yourself at risk unless shortstacked. If all went well to this point you can pick up some big pots with small bets. You may even limp or raise 2xBB continually with any marginal hand if there are crippled players behind you and action folds in front of you, encouraging 1 good player to "come along now and put this shortstack all in with me or step aside, sir. (Don't do that if wildly loose player is there with chips enough to screw around with you) Be a good neighbor here and do NOT bet vs the other players unless you hit a beast hand that beats pretty much everything otherwise check it down and take out the all in 2 vs 1. Ignore side pot unless it is substancial and you have most chips in play of all players involved in this hand. At this point in game it is more about how much ammo you have compared to opponents at your current table than what cards you have. It is about getting butts out of seats. If you have a huge stack of chips, you are the bouncer on duty for crippled players. Otherwise, sit pretty and get your chips in good while isolating pots best you can. Sometimes at final table I chill and sometimes I really open up the starting hands as dynamic changes and go maniac here. If you feel it, do it. Think positively at all times. Always envision the win! Great "luck" to you!

Negativite thoughts at poker table

I am always curious to know peoples experiences with negativity at the virtual MTT. My experiences and perceptions changed as I knew more about the game and that led me from hardcore break evener to chipping up the bankroll somewhat consistently. One day I began to force myself to think positively about every major hand I ever play from that moment onwards. My win ratios suddenly soared. I wish I kept a journal and knew the exact date I realized this was a thing, but I can nearly pinpoint it on my old Cereus logs. At this point I was able to put together a several micro cashes everyday and quite a few wins. Once in a blue moon the wrong thing enters my head like the exact card my opponent needs to make a hand, and it happens. How or why is this possible? Is it quantum physics? Is it "the power of positive thinking" my dad always talked about? Is it (perhaps) I had finally learned how to beat the algorithm subconsciously after several million play $ hands at same site for years through some sort of conditioning? Could it possibly be what is written in the Bible and 2 or more of us are summoning the holy ghost to "walk amongst the people." Oddly, I used to watch 1 player everyday and shower her with positive thoughts and her win ratio took off also, come to think of it. I had no idea it was a 16 year old girl at the time-Annette Oberstad. It seemed after awhile I was not the only one watching her develop an amazing MTT game, but that little girl grew up to be the biggest winner female in the world.

Did we make this happen? Did HE make this happen? Only reply if you have applied this method or use it daily. :)

Performing well in any MTT requires a positive winning mindset and patience. Let the critical spots come to you. Remember, you can't win the tournament on the first hand, but you CAN LOSE it.

It's so sad that you need to speak good English. It's not my native language. But I try to study it. I have to use a translator.

Tilt tip. If you want to get rid of tilt, make a game plan.

Tell me how you can overcome fear, or tils, when a tournament passes far away. I'm starting to worry and become more secretive, when in theory the contrary is more aggressive, as the blinds grow. I'm stuck like this and I can't play...
We have the same problem, I lost a WOOCP classification yesterday and just now a $50 tournament, I feel that Tilt's is the main reason for losing silly in tournaments :(
But I don't know how to overcome

Do not go all in in the tournament poker without saw flop. If you have pocket AA your losing odd is 90%
Don't be that dramatic... Losing chance with pocket Aces I would say about 20/30%. Sometimes it just happens... 😀
In tournaments, main goal is to stay in game. So blind all-in is obviously bad anyway.

Sit n go, in my opinion.
Spin n go is good for training the late game, in final table against the last players of a tournament.

I also think patience is the key factor. You need to be thinking on the long run, not simply winning that hand or the next.

Should I be avoiding coin flips or shoves until later in the tournament. I find I try playing tight answer stronger in later and tighter in early position. But it seems to not be working that great. Any tips on how to last longer in tourneys.
In many different situations, it comes down to a coin flip on tourneys. But we all know probability remains a factor. I like to think on my odds when calling or shoving considering, specially, the quantity of players that already jumped in or out of the hand. Not only the position, your hand or the amount of the all in.

Two important aspects of analysis that you should consider in poker tournaments regarding winning strategies are:

  1. Payout structure: It is essential to understand the prize distribution in a poker tournament. You need to analyze the payout structure to identify crucial moments where you can secure a prize position or aim for higher rewards. For example, if the tournament has a staggered payout structure with significant jumps in rewards, you can adjust your strategy to be more aggressive during the bubble or the final table, aiming to maximize your chances of achieving a significant profit.
  2. Stack sizes: Analyzing players' chip stacks in the tournament is vital for making appropriate strategic decisions. Evaluating the relative stack sizes at the table allows you to identify players with more or less maneuvering room. For instance, players with small stacks may be under pressure and more prone to taking risks, which can be an opportunity for you to apply pressure and steal their chips. Similarly, players with large stacks may be in a comfortable position and more selective in the hands they choose to get involved with.
These two aspects, the payout structure and stack sizes, are crucial for making informed strategic decisions in poker tournaments and increasing your chances of achieving successful outcomes.

Đừng tham gia giải đấu poker mà không thấy thất bại. Nếu bạn có túi AA tỷ lệ thua của bạn là 90%
It's not exactly a 90% loss rate, I think it's 45%.
