Let's say your bankroll allows you to play but to $10 SNG. Does that mean you can play a $10 SNG satellite to a $100 MTT? It's not against BRM to buy in to the satelitte, but if you make it to the MTT, you're violating BRM to play if you have the option to withdraw from the target tournament.
It seems to me that if you have the option to unregister from the higher buy-in tournament, you have to to follow BRM, and if you get stuck in the tournament, it was a waste to play the satellite in the first place.
It seems satellites are best for recreational players who might just take a couple shots to win a possibly life-changing tournament package, or at least a cool poker-vacation, or for professional players who have a significant edge on the satellites but just consider them as regular tournaments where they play them over and over again to pick up multiple packages that they then get $$$ for.
For a serious player, it seems they should only play satellites if the target tournament is within their bankroll anyways.
One other related question: when there are steps satellites, do you always start at the bottom step to extract max value? Or if it's within your bankroll you go all the way to the final satellite with the highest satellite value, so it's easier to get to the target tournament but it's less of a value (less ROI to turn $2100 to $10k than $0.11 to $10k, but probably in long run better to do the former than latter if you can afford it).
I've heard the strategy of using semi-traditional BRM with steps tickets, where you only play step 1 until you have sufficient step 2 tickets, then use all the step 1 tickets until you have sufficient step 3 tickets, etc.
