I had to quit playing poker because of how it was affecting my life and finances, I had terrible bankroll control. Now I am trying to play freerolls and read forums to get better while I just enjoy playing however I can get my hands in. My question would be if I only play freerolls do you think I can still get some decent experience with reading people and figuring out what to do in certain positions? I do find myself playing how I think I should and taking risks I may not otherwise take but that for now it has turned out well for me in most situations.

Playing freerolls will always be a good and healthy alternative to play poker .... do not jeopardize your money allows you to play without stress ... that helps you regain confidence in your game and the possibility of earning some money ... ! You can even practice some game strategy.

I was always a live cash game player, then I started playing freerolls a year ago. While a good deal of them are donkfests, I did learn a lot of things that I never knew before, like stealing, and 10-20 BB shoving ranges and a great deal of other things. They also allowed me to try out different types of bluffs with no risk but my time.

Play freerolls, and how to get out to fight, because you need to win, and use all tools possible for this, patience, study, luck, survive a freeroll of 5 thousand player, and arriving at a final table is much more rewarding than you I paid a Sng tournament of 1 dollar of 180 player. Freerolls will give you an experience that no other will ever encounter, the resistance.

Go to pokerschoolonline. Make an account and start playing for the League. It starts again in
4 days. Its a grind but you learn a lot once you get to the later stages of the elementary tournament. I started playing 6 weeks ago, and qualified for this months high school league.
Still learning a lot and I hope I'll keep improving as quickly. If you're in doubt whether you played a hand correctly, just post it in the MTT hand analysis subforum.

Good luck!!

The early stages of free rolls play is very fishy. A lot of unusual bets and plays. Once you get to the money, or even deeper it starts to play like a regular tournament and can give you some good experience at the later levels in a tournament.

Most everything has been said but yea, freerolls are risk-free and you can definitely learn a little. Check out a lot of the private games that are really cheap or free. You might find some decent games cause they have leaderboards and competitions that people play for.

It's good that you had the discipline to take a break. I think most people on here can relate to your situation. The best way to solve it is to not play for several months and save up a big lump. This is what I did. I saved up 6 Months of living expenses and 100 Buy-Ins for my current limit, and since then it's been clear sailing. I can withstand any downswing and as a result I don't react emotionally to bad runs of variance. In terms of freerolls, as the guys above said they're great for getting practice and it's FREE! So if you do happen to get lucky and make a final table for a big prize then that's a win.

Freerolls are fun. However, it will not help your game to much. Most of the players play in ways that others in cash games never play. As a result, its easy to get complacient and not play well. Bad habits will cost in a real money game.

You can get great experience in patience waiting for a good many crazies to donk out. Also you can see different hands and what you could have done with them if you fold, or what you could have done differently.
I find that playing with the play chips is better for experience, especially in cash tables. You will be surprised when you get to bigger tables how good some of the players are. It takes a lot of the anxiety away, you can always reload and not starve. You can also play different games and get used to those as well.
Playing the freerolls will not be stress free really.

I used to play for hours on end, but I couldn't play for a while and I am trying to get back consistently. Freerolls are all Im playing right now. Good practice for me I believe. Donkfests help me stay patient for good hands and while I wait patiently most of the donks dissappear. Good luck and happy trails.

It does however get you used to being in a tourney situation. I myself am glad I am doing some free rolls to get used to playing in a tourney again.
Even when playing at higher levels, you still have to avoid some crazy players.

It is recommended by many professional players to start playing freeroll, and it goes up in stages, when it is dominating this level, go up to the next one, and keep improving.

Freerolls are a good place to start. Keep reading and studying the game and apply the knowledge you gain in these freerolls where you can experiment without losing your shirt. You already know you had issues with bankroll management so focus in that area and stick to it. I see many people who build up a little bankroll and blow it all in one game. While you may get lucky once in a while, long term it is a disaster waiting to happen and frustrating. I wish you all the luck and success on the tables!

Freerolls are definitely a great place to start! I use them for practice and building an online bankroll. The beginning through the middle stages of open freerolls definitely have a lot of variance and can be frustrating, but with low buy-in live/online tournaments you will experience similar types players. When you get to later stages the quality will increase. I also see a marked improvement in the overall quality of players from forums etc.

I dont deposit any money online and save it for live tournaments - part of my bankroll management.

This is the best place to start. I have built a small bank roll on ACR/BCP through CC and have even cashed in their regular freerolls (total purse is only $10 though). Play serious and don't treat it like a free buy in and you will do well!

I think that if they can help you improve your game, because the problem is not the freeroll but the players and their lack of seriousness, I can assure you that occasionally you can find freerolls where the players are a little more serious, or at a certain point the players calm down and play with more seriousness and it gives you a margin of time to read

Absolutely! I love playing poker tournaments but don't have near the roll to pay buy-ins nonstop so freerolls are a blast. Obviously the beginning of a freeroll versus a normal tourny is not at all the same. Because there's no investment (buy-in) you have people just shoving their stacks in for a double up at the beginning and making crazy bets. So you'll need more luck than usual to get through the first stage. After that it's a great place to practice your moves!
