Hi, I'm an SNG and headsup player typically but I won myself 2x $75 tickets which I'll use for the MiniFTOPS main event in January. I have some basic understanding of MTT concepts, ICM and deepstacked and shortstacked play basics but nothing specific. I tend to not play MTTs because of the long amounts of time that I need to commit.

What do you think will increase my skill over a short period of time? I have around a month off university from end of next week. I was thinking of playing some $0.5 45 mans on stars and possibly low stakes turbo MTTs on ipoker etc. Also, what about learning resources? thanks

That's a great idea, play the micros on stars, they fill up fast and you can get a ton of volume in.

Best thing I can advise is that if you're coming from a HU SnG background, is to be disciplined with your hands and don't get involved in many pots early stages, unless you have a big hand. The games are most profitable when antes are in play and every ones short stacked. Stealing and re stealing becomes key in winning tournaments. Assuming you're a good HU player; you short stack game should be better than most.

only play strong hands, and some speculative hands in position the early levels.
open up your game when the blinds and antes come in to play
only play medium strength/trap hands when blinds are worth stealing, and still be careful about it. They are called trap hands for a reason (AJ, KJ, etc)

Iagree play a ton of micros but avoid turbos since im guessing $75.00 will be a 10 min blind structure so its more relevent to you,

The best thing I would suggest is watch winning mtt videos on youtube there are at least a douzen ive seen ranging from $35.00 to $1,000 buy in, watch these over and over and make sure you fully know your spots and strategy,

if you have all that information absorbed fresh in your mind from a winning high stake mtt player there is no way you can get crushed on the day, make sure you drill all the info in though so its crystal clear

Search poker on google books and uoull find a lot of books and tbh harrkngton on holdem is kind of old...I think it was written in early 2000s when there was a poker boom theres no poker boom rjght now and a lot of the players are seaslned veterans that stsrted then

Thanks for the replies.. will be playing some games but I've been kinda unlucky in that I won't be able to multitable loads, as my pc motherboard got fried. So, I'll have to use my laptop instead...

Will be playing some freerolls here and there - got a $10k freeroll seat for 888, have a weekly $1k I can play as well.

Strategy wise, I have some videos that I'll watch. How many mtts do you think I should be playing at once? I have played 10+ sngs before but I want to focus on my decisions more in this format

Id say in the eay rounds you can start out with 4 and then dont reload that way as you get deeper in to the tourneh on one table youll be able to concentrate more because you got knocked out on another one

Yeah, guess it makes sense to start with 4 or 6 tops. Especially as I'll be using my laptop and not my desktop with dual monitors...

Also, I had a look at pokerstars MTT schedule and there doesn't seem to be that many tourneys for a dollar or so GMT time. Should I mix in more sites if that's the case?

I'd also spend some time watching tournaments at or near the $75 buyin level. Try to get a feel for how the play there is different vs at the micros; e.g. more aggressive, less limping, more emphasis on things like position and value-betting
