Sit n Go's, worth it or too much variance?

I tried building a bankroll using microstakes turbo sit n go's and i found that i only cashed a few, and won even less. Do you think the variance is worth the rewards of a sit n go? how do you beat them when nits will call with any 2 cards?

Make them pay dearly is all you can do. I have played with some rich donks in big buy ins 500+ and they play the same way so it can happen in all levels.

Soooooo... a couple of thoughts:

- Yes it can be done. It can be done with any game if you're good enough at it.
- Anything can happen over a small sample size. I don't know how many games you've played, but I'm guessing probably not that many? They're certainly lower variance than, say MTTs.
- Calling with any two cards is the opposite of what nits do.

I'll add a disclaimer before the next bit: turbo STTs used to be my main game and I played a huge volume of them, but I haven't really been able to play them since Black Friday. Anywho, here goes:

There's also some strategy specific to SnGs (and tournaments in general) that you need to learn to be successful at them. Position and relative stack sizes are two things that matter a lot, especially around the bubble. There are spots where it's absolutely correct to be calling people with almost any two cards. And in general you want to be building your strategy about playing to win, not just playing to cash.

If you're letting yourself get blinded down because you haven't been catching any cards, and you're just hoping to sneak over the bubble into the money, you're asking to be pushed around by the bigger stacks.

Agreed stsngs are the lowest variance of tourneys, the less players the better in this regard.

Sngs in the padt were great because they were newish and those of us lucky to play them during the boom made out great... Now a days not so much because there is way more information on how to properly play them, especially at lower stakes.

I still say they are worth it if youre good at them

S&Gs, particularly 50:50\Double or Nothing, are low variance and worth a shot to build a roll.

I would suggest that you pay particular attention to the speed of the S&Gs you play.
e.g.
a) I like a game with 5min levels, no anti and a 100BB starting stack. This is pretty slow for a S&G and I get to play some poker ... low variance.
b) In comparison there are faster S&Gs with 2min levels and a 33BB starting stack (and possibly an anti kicks in at some point). This leads to higher variance and a more specialised strategy is required.

So start off with the slower ones to gauge if this is good for your BR.

Based on my two-year construction of the bankroll starting from micro-limits, I advise you to start playing regularly and not turbo tournaments are much more opportunities to beat maniacs, buyout play with any two cards.

Sit & Go,a good option of workouts MTT tournaments.Every game will be opponents who play 90% of hands.Need to adapt to these changes and exploit them)And to build bankroll I'd Sit & Go -not played)

Sit n go's are a good way to build a bankroll but it can be a slow way to do it do you need a lot of patience. Avoid hyper sit n go's where you start with a small stack of 25 bbs as these come down to more luck than anything else.

Online, I prefer SNG's to MTT's because of the time factor. I can in 2 SNG's and be done, good rate of cashing, while an MTT is still in late reg nowadays.

I absolutely love winner-take-all $125 SNG's at live events. I play to chop as most players do, and use those winnings to freeroll or a good discount into a MTT.

I also agree with what OZ said above and will add.... patience, patience, patience.

If you're smart you will stay away from Turbo anything. It goes to fast and just becomes a donkfest all in. Play Reg. tourneys and such.

to play effectively in sng's you need a strong understanding of shorthanded play and push fold, if your not good at either your going to struggle

I think it would still be worth it and compared to a multi-table tournament I think the variance of making it out/in the money would be less. Due to fewer players and more spots that payout.
