Shoving on the bubble? Risk it or wait?

Recently I was playing in a tourney which had gone on break. The restart coincided with hand for hand play. This particular MTT was paying out to 36th place. I had around 32,000 in chips, and the blinds were at 1500 and 3000 when I picked up AKs. It was the very first hand back in, and to make matters worse, I was UTG. I checked the lobby real quick, and no one seemed about to go bust. Most even had way more chips than me. I decided to go ahead and shove. I got a loose call from a big stack with KQos and doubled through, but I quickly wondered if I had made the right decision. Would I always be able to find out if anyone else were close to busting out? Can u do this in a live tourney? Should I care about just getting into the money? What would other better players do in this spot? Let me know what you think.

36 place cannot have been worth much.
Doubling up gives you chances to compete for the big money, so you made the right decision.
However if you were on the FT bubble you need to understand that chips lost are worth more than chips won.
If you get eliminated here you have lost your FT opportunity and the money attached as players are eliminated on the Final Table.

I don't care about anything else, if I've got 10BBs AK always gets a shove.

I agree that when you make the money you have to go for everything that you have been playing for and especially with AK. There is no doubt in my mind that you should play that hand to the full extent, and if you have players that are calling loosely then, by all means, get it in and receive those calls where you're ahead. Great play. Keep it up! :)

In that situation, I wait. First, I've been fooled by AKs too often and second, with 10 BBs stack and hand-for-hand-play, I wait for someone else to go out. Won't take too long, cost me 1-2 more BBs and then I can still shove with 8 BBs.

To me that's better than risking your whole tournament on a hand like that, on the bubble.

But this is the perfect time to get ahead with chips :D - go in unless the others have nuts AA , KK , QQ , AK probably will fold ;)

Hey, you can do it otherwise, if you prefer and you get good results with it - but my ITM and ROI both went up after I stopped doing risky stuff when it got close to the money. So I'll continue this way. ;)

Bubble play is crucial if you want to win. Some players double their stack by stealing or restealing. Others wait for premium hands.

Without knowing you might have taken out a good player with a good working bankroll.
We don't work for pennies, we work for the fame. Final table is the goal, winning it is pleasure and cream on it.
Good decision, don't stop it, if it doesn't work out the next time or twice.
80% are waiting to let others do the work, so do the work and take the money!
Busted? Whatever, next try, next good decision.
It will pay out!!!

shove

I def. like the shove there. If you get called by better hands then that is sort of unlucky, but you will always have some outs... and getting the call from a worse hand is what you are looking for. once again unlucky in that situation. I like the all in- you must go for the win in the tourney!

And don't listen to him, he's already playing 50$ nbuy in stuff, that's completely out of my league, and I would do the same if it is about SERIOUS money!!!!
It all depends on your BRM

In such situations I get almost a 100% exit from the tournament, so I prefer to fold and wait.

Yes AK card is excellent and it can play well when there are big bets in the game, but it also happens and loses and you can get under TT and lose or under other small cards, you need to play cautiously, but I think you made the right decision in the game!

With AK at the late stage of the tournament, I think this is the right decision. As a rule, at such a stage of the tournament very rarely a good card comes in, if you do not play the AK then what to play the toga?

Depends what you want, if you want to gamble for final table you did right thing, but right play is to always take the money, that you can play more tournaments and take more money. Next time when you reach the bubble you can be big stack and finish in FT.

Not playing for 30th...

This was a great play. I'm pushing with AK, AQs, 88 or better PP...
My Philosophy is we're playing for top 3, not for 30th place...
You want that loose call, and have the probability of holding up. If you get knocked out on a 3 outer, there's always another tournament. Long term this move will pay off and in doing so will put you in higher pay out brackets. If you're always just looking to get "into" the money... Sure, you can fold fold fold...and make 2% of the prize pool. Or you can shove with the premium hand and it will hold 60-70% of the time... What this results in is you doubling up with a bigger stack and getting into the better payouts.

Nice move!

Good luck and good skill to you and all

Tim

You have to play the cards that are dealt to you sometimes. If you don't take the risk you may never know. However, I think you made right decision.

With 10BB I'm going to shove, between 15 and 20BB I prefer to raise and wait for the flop cards to decide what to do.

I would have risked as long as: I was out of awards, depending on the reading I have of my opponents
