Should've, would've, could've...how long do these thoughts stay with you?

For example I was 15th out of the tourney that looking back I should not have called an all in bet. The thing is the blinds were $10,000-20,000. I had about $140,000 and one of the big chip leaders at the table.

A guy was going all in every hand with $45,000. It was the third time in a row that he called "all-in" and finally I had a small pair 6-6. I call the $60,000. He flops a Q-9.

He gets a 9 on the river. I then am short stacked and go all in with an A-J os.

A pair of 9's beat me and I am out of the tourney.

Looking back, I should have been patient and just played the style I had been, but did not. I played the same tourney last Sunday and placed 33rd. so I feel I am improving but I am thinking if only....

Do those thoughts haunt you too?

Do those thoughts haunt you too?

Here's the way I prefer to look at it:
Copy the hand histories of these hands and review them after the game. Posting them in hand analysis helps (make sure to copy the hand history so that those analyzing have as much info as possible).

If you played well and faced a bad beat-- so be it. Know that you made the right move and that's the gambling aspect of poker. Shrug it off and move on to the next game.

If you analyze and realize that you did the "wrong" thing. Be thankful that you're able to analyze and learn from your mistakes. Understand what you did wrong and learn not to do it next time.

I don't know how long you've been playing poker, but I firmly believe that this is the attitude to make you a better player.

They used to, now I get haunted by I can't believe that happened. As long as you know you got your money in good, the outcome is pretty much up to the game. I no longer obsess over, " I should not have played that hand", I think more that I got it in when good, too bad it did not hold up.

Calling 3 BB's there against a loose guy is completely fine... Your being really results orientated there, even if you call and lose, your left with chips, if you call and win, you get a pretty huge equity boost and set yourself up to win the tournament. Your call was fine, it's results orientated thinking that makes you change your game. Basically, your probably creating more leaks in your game by changing, than if you just accepted losing a flip and moved on.

If your unsure of your play, perhaps you should save the Hand history and post it in the HA(HAnd anaylsis) section of the forum, and get feedback that way, so next time your in a similar position, you KNOW if the call is good/bad. Once you get to that stage, the results don't really matter, we should be in it for the long term, and not worry so much about the short term fluctuations.

+1

I used to torture myself over this same thing. Your call was fine. The guy was on life support and could have been pushing J - 2o, 4-5s, anything. No bad beat, a flip. You win some, you lose some. Overthinking this will tighten you up to the point that you start getting blinded off.

Just my $.02

i never let them get in the way anymore. each situation is different and if you have a hand where your opponent is on the draw, that's the best situation any player can ask for.
