I had about about 8700 left the blinds are 200-400 and im in the bb. utg folds early position raises 1600 it gets folded around too my i look down and i have a-j off i decide too call the 1200 to see the flop. T he goes 7-9-a. i decided too check the original raiser with 3400 chips in the pot decides too bet out 3000 after thinking about it for a minute i decide too call leaving me with 4100 chips on the turn the jack hits the board i hit two pair i decided to check and he check behind me. On the river the q hits i decide too go all in he takes about 5 minutes too make a decision he is thinking i have the str8 but he decide too call i turn over aj and he turns up a aq too make a better two pair my ? too u all is should i have pushed all in on the turn?

Its important we know his skill level and his range. For me AJ is a fold if I have a big enough stack to cash facing an early raise. alot of the time from an early position raise he's going to have a hand which has us beat enough of the time to make it -EV for us.
Its alot safer to regain position on the table and open some hands, pick up some pots without risking potentially 50% or more of our stack or getting knocked out.

the important thing to remember is dont get into your head that you have to play AJ in any particular way in any given game because the situation willl always differ.

but for the record after he raises the flop and you hit second pair on turn, its a great spot to Ship it in if he's going to be betting top pair alot of the time
its a tough spot for villain with QA/KA a fold is ok because we pick up the pot. and your winning most of the time when called

Although we don't have any info regarding the villain's range when he raises to 4BBs pre-flop, I agree with cotta777 that folding AJ here is not a bad idea given your stack size.

I'm not sure what your image is at the table, but both your pre-flop call and your check-call on the flop in the face of large raises must look pretty strong to the villain. I think that your check on the turn is fine. It may well be the best way to extract value from a villain who has been betting so aggressively. Let him give you his chips. The fact that he hits a three-outer on the river is just unlucky.

I don't think you should have played preflop or on the flop.

once you get lucky on the turn you should go all in.

on the river you should never go all in there, as you'll only get called by a better hand.

You check the river and if he bets big you'll have a tough decision to make, but that is the only way you'll gain any value from worse hands is by checking to induce a river bluff. Going all in serves no purpose as it causes worse hands to fold and better hands to call.
