Other than free ones they seem to be a lot of work for little gain. Id rather use the money to join a tourney for cash prizes and use that money to join higher tourneys. What am i missing?

lol thats what satellites do silly! Its a tournament with a guaranteed ticket into a higher tourney.
They are different in the aspect of payouts,
In a satellite all positions award the same amount and the game ends immediately after the bubble bursts.
In the Mtt you might 1.5 x your money or 20x
just depends on what you feeling like.
I suggest dabbling and see if you like it

I personally don’t like satellites unless a lot of seats are given out. The ones that are a single 9 handed table with 1 ticket for the winner I avoid. You end up needing to play and get lucky twice, once to win the satellite and then again to cash in the big tournament.

i would say yes however if they're only giving the ticket to first place, i won't play them. i have however played those that pay 5-9 tickets, and have profited.

Yes there are worth it but you need to know how to play them. its much different than a regular tournament. try avoiding marginal all ins, since its a "who can stay in longer tournament" and not a "who can get the most chips" and dont build a stack thats bigger than you need it.

I don't typically play satellites just because winning a seat to another tournament doesn't really feel like a prize for me. I can end up losing the ticket I win a tournament to and it just seems like an even bigger waste of time and money and energy than losing a normal tournament.

The prior post is recommended.
My opinion, play satellites. There is a Bulgarian player that I have encountered multiple times who plays satellites and has at least one chopped Sunday Million payday and has won hundreds of thousands of dollars online. That kind of success speaks for itself.

I think satellites are for people who have small bankroll, it helps them play tournaments with bigger buy-ins

I rarely play satellites because of their turbo structure. but it is important to play only those satellites where competition for one ticket is not more than 5-7 people

He did, and for that kind of big event it can make sense, because a lot of people cant afford the buyin. So by playing a satellite you give yourself a chance to win life changing money, which you would otherwise not have.

However today sites offer satellites for even their online microstakes MTTs, and if you are so broke, that you cant afford to play an 11$ MTT without using satellites, then just play a 1$ instead. You will have a much better chance of actually scoring a win.

I have won a few tickets in these satellite tournaments, but the problem is the time zone. I get the ticket and then the tournament that follows is so late that I cannot stay up to play it.

I do not like playing satellites. it takes far too much time and energy. I prefer to use this potential on MTT or espresso.

A lot of the time sattys are softer games, and sometimes they have unique structures which recreational players will not understand the ICM. If you can analyze the format and you can gain a big edge.

the 6 or 16 satellites are tough to win its much of a coin flip player shove all in with any two cards even if you have a strong hand you can't protect it against a 1 ticket satellite, good luck!

If you are winning player, satellites are the best.

As an example I have qualified for MTT's with 16.5$, 22 and got good money.

For 2 dollars you can play a 11, 16, 22 MTT and boosting a bankroll.

I'm playing a lot of them and also reached final tables or close to it in 11, 16 dollars buy in, wining hundreds of dollars with only 1 or 2 dollars.
For satellites I'm a +EV player for sure.

I do not like satellites on poker stars. But at 888 only 2-3 steps and you have a ticket for $ 33 (big fish) or $ 109 (pko).

Satellites can be a great way to get into a tournament that your bankroll doesn't let you play otherwise.

I’m in a Party Poker Facebook group and this comes up a lot

People play sattelites, then they complain about being auto regged into the target tourney. Party changed that. Now, not all of the satty’s auto reg.

People will play satty’s and now they’ll gripe about “not having time to play at (specific time a scheduled tourney starts at) “I have a job you know. I’m not online 24 hours a day”

Not sure that time zones are the real issue here. Players need to show accountability by understanding the terms of the games they enter to play. Don’t enter a tourney and then bellyache about not being able to play the next game because you haven’t taken 5 seconds to see “ hey. The target game is at x o’clock. I can’t play that one. I have to go to work”

Be smarter than the touch screen on your phone. Know your game before you start it up.
