This is actually a pretty tricky question. I think the root of the question is actually: should we adjust how we play based on how our opponents view us?
And I think the answer to that is a resounding YES.
But, this can have some issues. Here's where that process starts:
- First off, we need to understand what's happened at the table so far (what actions we've taken).
- Then, we need to understand how much of that information our opponents have absorbed (either by observing us or using a HUD).
- Then, we need to have a sense of who our opponents are and how they are going to change their play or adjust to us.
- Then, we need to figure out the best counter adjustment, if any, we should use.
See where we start to run into problems? We don't even know if our opponents are paying attention if we're playing online (although we can make some assumptions about what sort of player they are based on their actions thus far). The key to adjustment is understanding how your opponents think about and respond to your image at the table, and this is probably one of the toughest things to incorporate into an already tough game.
While I find this stuff endlessly fascinating, I'd have to recommend playing fundamentally sound poker for a while before you worry too much about your image, particularly in an online environment where this adjustment and counter adjustment cycle is so nuanced and subtle.
