Hello,

I had just started a tournament in which I had relatively many good starting hands at the beginning.
That made me raise a lot of pre-flop or play 3-bets. After 20 hands I had a VPIP of > 60.
Do you think you should not play a hand once in a while to have a certain reputation at the table?

I think it's definitely a good idea to mix up your play and balance your range. Instead of thinking whether you should "not play a hand" I believe you should be thinking whether your range is too wide. Think about how you actually achieved that VPIP, what you were raising with, from which position and against which and how many opponents that you had what reads on?
How had you been getting on? If you've won a lot of the hands you've played by showing down good cards you can keep a wide range as people will be more likely to think you have something. If you've won a lot of pots uncontested you can keep trying to do so but tighten up when people play back at you.

If you have been getting quality hands and it continues i would not get so worried about my VIP. If you have not been showing down hands people will start to think you way to loose and really pay you off more. The thing you need to worry about is when the hand are just playable those are the hand you should slow down with for a round or so. Jack Ten suited is fine to raise on the button but after playing so many hand so quickly this would be good time to play little tighter and fold a hand like this.

I think those guys said it all! When i play the problem i have is getting them to call because when they see me play with A10 and up only and pocket pairs 10 and up at showdowns they tend to get scared when i raise!

Your VPIP will make sense and talk about you if you have enough hands from other players.the fact that you initially successfully increased your stack is good. it should always warn your opponents and understand what kind of player you are. Your power at the table will correspond to your actions and their results are correct ?play your game as you can, the main thing is that you feel good, and you will either have authority at the table or you will be used in your actions

If you're getting good hands play them. Raise them too. Don't worry if it looks like you're playing too many hands. When you're running good you must take advantage of the situation.

It could be ok to play that number of hands at early stages but you can't keep entering every and each single pot otherwise they will strip you off of all what you have won you should becarefull when you play so many hands you are exposing your open range and good players will exploit you

Thx for your replies. :)
I think my range was not to wide yesterday, it was ok it was just so many good hands at the beginning.
In the end I showed some of these good hands and didn’t muck them just for reputation.
The tournament self was at the end also ok. I finished itm, place 60 of ~1000

This is actually a pretty tricky question. I think the root of the question is actually: should we adjust how we play based on how our opponents view us?

And I think the answer to that is a resounding YES.

But, this can have some issues. Here's where that process starts:

  • First off, we need to understand what's happened at the table so far (what actions we've taken).
  • Then, we need to understand how much of that information our opponents have absorbed (either by observing us or using a HUD).
  • Then, we need to have a sense of who our opponents are and how they are going to change their play or adjust to us.
  • Then, we need to figure out the best counter adjustment, if any, we should use.

See where we start to run into problems? We don't even know if our opponents are paying attention if we're playing online (although we can make some assumptions about what sort of player they are based on their actions thus far). The key to adjustment is understanding how your opponents think about and respond to your image at the table, and this is probably one of the toughest things to incorporate into an already tough game.

While I find this stuff endlessly fascinating, I'd have to recommend playing fundamentally sound poker for a while before you worry too much about your image, particularly in an online environment where this adjustment and counter adjustment cycle is so nuanced and subtle.

I think really good avoid some hands.Too many hands can put you in trouble or double your chips. But I like your strategy.
