How can you use re - entry tourneys to your advantage? Is there an advantage?

I was sitting at a table in a live tourney and this gentleman sat down and proceeded to play what seemed to be every hand and lost 30K chips in just a few minutes. He then re entered, sat in the same seat, and pretty much did the same thing with his chips. He then got up and walked away.

A while later, when they were condensing the tables I saw this same guy at another table. That means he bought in at least 3 times. Unless you final table, for the most part, this doesn't seem cost effective.

The only thing I can think it would help in deciding to play some marginal hands I wouldn't normally play. You can play a bit more aggressive.

What do you all think?

by not playing them :) naw they are ok I just hate them . I think
you have it right though , they push marginal hands and build a big stack
or re-enter . I just play them regular and try not to have to re-enter
but the few times I have it was like you said , cost prohibitive. unless you
are in top three you might not even get all your money back.
I played the $2.20 re-entered once , and after almost four hours I finished 5th or 6th for $3.85 :)

but maybe someone knows better that's just my opinion and style matters,
you're pretty aggro so you should be able to take advantage of the loose
playing from everyone trying build or re-enter . jmo :)

Re-entry

I try to never reenter more than once. The placing payout usually isn't worth it, unless you take it deep. I really like to play freeze-outs just because you see less people playing marginal hands looking for junk. I hear yah.

Re-buys allow you to play more creatively than tournaments without rebuys. I think for many weak players, they are more suitable than conventional

I've seen this as well, I don't really know why people do this but they probably do it because they get careless and if they win its like whatever they play it out and if they lose its also whatever they'll just rebuy and do the same thing. Money they're using must be chump change.

PS made re-entry in Sunday Million recently. Because they can't gather guarantee after this year's reforms. So soon we can lose this legendary tournament.

Rebuys suck but sometimes the pay out structure may justify playing it.

I have played re buy tournaments and I always rebuy immediately.; This seems logical as it gives you a extra chips. I don't like re entry games as it seems like a license to be a donk.

Re-Entry tournaments are great, but don't think you have to play them super loose-aggressive in order to do well. At the same time, I would play them a little more aggressively than I would a freeze out MTT, but it doesn't have to be balls-to-the-wall-all-in-every-hand crazy.

I approach RE's as a freeze out, but with the knowledge I still have chances to get back into the game if this go bad. So, this basically means, I'm still playing a pretty TAG style but I might be little more open to semi-bluffing in key spots for my stack or stacking off in 50-50 situations. I either win a big pot or I get KO'd and I can re-enter, but I'm not doing anything super crazy.

The main pro of a Re-Enter MTT is that you can re-enter at any point during the late registration. So, you don't have to re-enter immediately after you get knocked out. If you take a bad beat, you take a break and skip a few levels, get your head back in the game, and then decide if you want to join back in. Unlike a Re-Buy MTT where you have to make that decision to re-buy as soon as you get KO'd. If you don't you can no longer register into the MTT.

I like to just register late in Re-Entry MTTs and skip the early to mid levels. The reasons why I late register is because there is more action and I can skip the slow early stages. Yes, I'm giving up value by not playing the low blinds, but most players in the micros don't play the mid-late stages very well and I can take advantage of that. Also, late registration usually closes soon after I late reg, so I don't have to worry about re-entering multiple times and can play like a late stage freeze out MTT.

My only advice if you're thinking about entering/re-entering in the late stages is to make sure the stack vs blinds is something you're comfortable starting at. If you aren't comfortable joining in a game where you only have 10 BBs to start, then don't enter/re-enter too late into the game. If you do late reg, be sure to check out the starting stacks, current blind levels, and how fast blinds increase. Late reg with 10 BBs is crazy but doable, but I'd advise to late reg around 30BB-50 BBs to give yourself some maneuverability.

The main con of Re-Enter MTTs is that you have to pay the rake each time you re-enter. This really cuts into your ROI and is why I advise against playing super crazy. Sure, $1 + .10 Re-Entries might sound like much, but if you're buying into 5-6+ times each tournament, it adds up. This is where Re-Buy MTTs shine, you only pay the rake once.

Lets say you're playing a $1 + .10 Re-Entry and re-enter 9 times or 10 entries total. You've paid $10 + $1 total for 10% rake. Compare that to a $1 + .10 Re-Buy with the same total MTT buy-in, it comes out to $10 + .10 or 1% rake. Now imagine playing 1000 MTTs paying of the same buy-in, but paying 10% rake vs 1% rake.

In fact, I did it for you. Lets say you profit 12K.

-For Re-Entries: you pay $11 per game x 1K = $11K in buy-ins. Your ROI is: 9.1%
-For Re-Buys: you pay $10.10 per game x 1K = $10.1K in buy-ins. Your ROI is: 15.8%.

So, you can see the huge difference 6.7% difference in ROI based on rake alone, which is why it is advised to don't be re-entry crazy with Re-Enter MTTs.

I like rebuy tourneys for the fact of adding to the prize pool. More money the better. However all because its a rebuy tourney doesn't mean you have to play like everybody else!!!

ohshootmybad: Interesting reply there. Given me some things to think about.

To me it doesn't make sense why someone should re-enter/rebuy more times than the bottom end of the payout *but* have recently noticed a couple of players in an online MTT rebuying and rebuying and...

At the time I just thought they were deranged but I now have a theory (certainly for online) that they may be using the cheap MTTs as practice for tactics they wouldn't normally try at their usual levels.

I say this because in my limited experience I have found that tactics in play money games is nothing like a real money game so they are of limited use to practice real game tactics. So if I want to improve in $1 tourneys I have to play $1 tourneys.

I disagree that rebuys or re-entry suck. Its great option and opportunity start the game first after an unsuccessful spot or gross errors, sometimes after a bad game rebuys or re-entry helps log back into the game and win the tournament.

is two reasons for this. If playing a forum game with people here? I am likely to rebuy add on and re enter just cause have the bank and like certain people so spending a couple hours here an there is just plain cool with right people:)

second one tourney i buy into is bigger starting chips on like acr so 5000 chips or 25000 etc.. for small amounts 55 cents etc..

another event might re enter is based on the add on if is a tournament. if is a nice add on say chips are 2000 add on gives you 5000 chips youve only doubled up for 4k this add on puts you into the top 25 players? To me thats a good add on bet that will beat enough peeps to get a solid money

You can make a rebuys work to your advantage, even if you're a tighter player. People generally play a lot looser. Even if people don't recognize it this in-turn makes you loosen up a bit even if you think to the contrary. So the strategy is to focus in on the looser players and wait to play better hands against these players, but keep in mind you don't necessarily need much of a premium hand.
On the flip side an aggressive player is bound to get more action and is also looking to start the non-rebuy section of the tournament with a big stack and can pretty easily accomplish this if they remain persistent. In rebuys, don't forget about the add-ons as well!
