As (I flatter myself) an above average tournament player, I dislike unlimited rebuy tourneys because they give rich donks a chance to keep coming back every time you knock them out. As we all know, I'm sure, it only takes one donk to get lucky and suck you out at the wrong moment to put you out of contention or even out completely. The more rebuys that are allowed, the more chance that that one unlucky moment will bite me.
But I love single-rebuy tournaments for the same reason. If I figure I'm good enough to keep my head above water and harvest a decent amount of chips from players worse than me, I'm perfectly content to see a donk buy back in. He only has one more chance to suck out on me, and if I figure I can outplay him say 75% of the time, that's +EV for me all the way to the bank.
I agree with you entirely, and we probably take the a similar stance on it. However, I absolutely despise
unlimited rebuys, and I'm uncomfortable with the add-ons too. One rebuy would be fine if there has to be rebuys. It gives incentive for more aggression earlier allows people to play with less fear knowing they have a second chance. Whilst this sounds kind of fishy initially, even non-rebuyers could benefit from the looser players cherry bombing chips into them with less-than-premium hands. Any more than one is an infuriating donkfest designed to make more money for the people running them.
People will ALWAYS take rebuys. As much as I despise them, I'm pretty sure your ROI would probably be higher if you're an above average tournament player. I consider myself the same but stil find them infuriating. In late registration tournaments, it's almost better to register a minute before the break and just add-on....
Despite all that I've said, I'm firmly against rebuys. I think it goes against the whole idea of a tournament. What is going to happen during the next Superbowl
? A team loses early and just buys back in...
