i saw someone say that you should be willing to rebuy several times, is this the truth? i usually play because idiots rebuy 10-15 times and pump up the prize pool, and try to maximize my profit and cut my losses if i get a bad beat...

I hate rebuys. It was something that was created to get more money from the poker players. Honestly, would you consider a winner of a poker tournament who rebuyed at least twice a good poker player? Do you consider it a valid win? Rebuys are like mulligans, the pros never do it but amateurs do (and at least mulligans are free!). I stay away from rebuys at all costs. I stick to freezeouts. Once you're out, you're out!

Yeah rebuys are not so good for the better players. But the only good thing about them is the prizepool get's juiced up. I personally don't mind them, but I try to stay away from them as much as I can. ;)

rebuys...i hate those bloody things

before the add-on break, you can be either the really tight guy that values his buy-in and takes advantage of the 15-rebuy maniacs and their loose calls

or you can be one of those maniacs yourself...which actually isn't such a bad idea - you play generally looser than you normally would and hope to double or even triple up and have a nice chip stack going into the break. Obviously this costs way more and is the more aggressive way, i guess you could say

after the rebuy it tends to play more like a normal tourney

anyways in response to your actual question:p i don't know if there's a specific number of rebuys you should have available but it depends on what style of play you're leaning towards i guess

Actually, one could argue that rebuys are actually more of a test of skill then standard tourneys, as because of the rebuys/addons there will be more chips in play in relation to the blind levels in the later stages.

And of course you should be prepared to rebuy if you enter, this should be obvious.

Not many places charge vig on rebuys, so this is untrue.

Really, I don't particularly enjoy rebuys myself, but knocking them like this is pretty ridiculous.

Daniel Negreanu once did a rebuy 33 times and then took first. Since most the prize pool was his, I don't think he made much. LOL

Almost true titans, dannny boy did involve himself in a re-buy fest i think in 2003 wsop, 12 times i think was his final count.
But of course it was at all times calculated on his behalf that that he was going to win it.
Being that he favors 6-4os and the likes pre-flop, i am not surprised at the amount of re-buys he purchased.
He won that event and a bracelet to boot, but he also knows he wont be doing that kind of foolishness again anytime soon.

zinzan boy was he lucky

To be correct zinzan1000 Negraneau entered the 2004 wsop $1000 rebuy tourney and went broke 27 times and ended up in third place. The tourney had 538 players who made 534 rebuys and 262 add-ons. For third place Negraneau got $101 000 for a profit of $73 000.

Yes, i figured it was something crazy like that.
Fair play to him though for turning such a profit.
Nearly $30,000 buy-in, he must of had one of those special dreams that he was destined to win it.

buy ins can be the best and worst of tourneys at the same time, just depends on your mood. Unless you are willing to play solid'ish poker for about 5 hours then dont enter, as the 1st hour you lose like 5 players!

The rebuys do stump up the prize pool quite a bit and that does help, especially if you are a solid player and dont get outdrawn like crazy.

Rebuy satelite are the place to be though. I have often qualified for some big buys in (over $1000) through satelites as some players are willing to rebuy up the half the value of the tourney entry fee, sometimes more

With rebuys it changes the colour of the tournament - it rewards relatively aggressive play early in the tournament, as players can try to build a significant chip stack while knowing the tournament isn't over if they lose out. This benefits the very aggressive players, and also keeps the fish in the tournament for longer. I'm not keen on rebuys myself, although in a rebuy tournament I'll take an add-on if it will make my chip stack go from anaemic to reasonable, and if there's a guaranteed prize pool which isn't filled by player buy-ins (i.e. there's an overlay amount), then I'll definitely look at rebuying if I happen to get knocked out myself.

I don't like them, but rebuys seem to be the norm as far as MTT's go. It's actually hard to find freezeouts for the most part and when you do the entry is $20 or $30. It's enticing but kinda expensive for cheap bastards like me.

I rebuy right off the start - then if i lose them chips ill rebuy maybe once more. Then buy the addon at the first break.
You have to bet big with high pockets in the early rebuy period. Chips are flying around so much you hands are going to get sucked out on.

I have never been a fan of re-buys. I think I've only played in two that I can remember (not counting low cost re-buys for forums-these are to promote your site and friends). This is a contest of elimination by the best hand, not the best 5 out of 9 times. Along that same line, I would like to see the return of some winner take all events. To play for hours upon hours and outplay anywhere from 200 to 2000 people to claim your lion's share of.....22%? I'd prefer to find a tourney sometimes where you put your money in the hat and the last man (or woman ) standing wears that hat home.

I think rebuys are a good value if you know how to work them to your advantage. Rebuys make for a lot looser play in the first hour. You stand a really good chance of making a large increase in your chip count by taking advantage of this play.

You also have the protection of rebuying yourself if something really goes bad like a higher flush to yours when you are allin.

The pot payoffs change also for the better with more positions being payed and higher payouts.

Not a fan at all,but it does allow for aggression in the first hour. You can lose on a few bad beats or your favorite hands and it's not over. After the first hour, hopefully the blinda are too high, for any smart player to rebuy in.Add ons on the other hand, always helpful ;-)
