With unlimited rebuys, how many rebuys will/should one take before "giving up" and leaving?

Secondly, does one always take the add-on?

Thanks.

I've started to play (1r + 1ad) tourneys and had success, and was thinking about moving to unlimited rebuy tourneys.

My general rule of thumb is to never rebuy more than a mid-cash will get me. I always rebuy-right off the bat and add-on if I have below to average stack.

I always do the initial re-buy and am prepared to re-buy again once or twice. I ALWAYS do the add-on - will never understand why someone would not do it.

never quit before the addon or you are tossing away money. If you reach your budget limit, then fold to the addon.

All you guys that quit early are leaving free dead money and equity for me and everyone who stays in.

The only time i wouldn't rebuy is if you were getting like 2bb for your rebuy.

Basically, don't play unlimited rebuys unless you have at least enough for the buyin, + 3 rebuys + addon at minimum.

there is one kind of rebuy tournament i might break this rule for: satellites. If you're approaching a significant portion of the seat value in rebuys it might make the tournament a non +EV prop for you.

Heh, I just kind of learned this the heard way!

I must say, I LOVE playing like a maniac early in a rebuy :D Ended the $3R/40k (which is still going) rebuy period with 22k chips hitting 75/150 blinds. The hand that got me a large portion of those chips -> 72s from the SB, calling a PFR and stuff. Anyway, it feels good to have a stack like that. Using said stack to put people in brutal spots and steal lots of pots is good too :)

I was replying to an earlier post about not rebuying in a satty rebuy where yo uhad already spent up to near th eseat value. playing like a maniac when that happens is a bad idea..

I always want to have as many chips as I am allowed in rebuys. Kinda like a cash game where you always want xxx amount of BB's on auto top off. Be prepared to rebuy a few times incase you bust before the add on period. In my opinion you should always add on. I heard one exception would be if you were so far in the chip lead, than you might can skip the add on, but it is still not a great idea imo to skip the add on.. I mean why not add more chips to you stack if you have the opportunity, isn't that kinda the point of poker.. to get more chips.
So if you are playing like $1 rebuys for example, you want to have a bigger BR than you would have for just $1 MTT's with no rebuys... maybe 2-5x the amount depending on what you are comfortable with.

Well this is just not true.

However one should adapt to the structure, but thats a different topic...

I know the general understanding is "always take the add-on". I'm guessing it's generally +$EV to do this.

I take it if it's > 10% of my stack.

I can't see the point of it in those instances when the add-on is < 5% of your stack. Can anyone do the math to explain to me how spending an extra ~buyin is +$EV here?

It's +EV as soon as you get allin with a bigger stack then you later on.

Say it's a stars 1500 rebuy with 2000 addon. IF you take the addon you will be 4000 ahead when you double through. IF you double through again after that it's 8000 etc.

That's a lot of chips to win if you hadn't added on. ALWAYS take it, with the possible exception of having 10x more chips than the field. Remember you need ALL of them to win.

$1-5r i will go up to ten rebuys ( but will do more if I think I'm still +ev), but generally like to do less, obv.

$10 to 20r I'll keep in lower and play a much lower variance style during the rebuy hour. I can't recall not taking the add-on on purpose.

My record is 27 rebuys during the $3r. Yes! 27! But that was a long time ago and is NOT a brag.

If you want to do the minimum, ther are several 1r+a and 2r+a tourny's that are great values.
