To REBUY or NOT (better chance to win?)

General question on poker tournaments. Do you think you make more money long term by taking 2 optional rebuys always?

FOR EXAMPLE: $3.50 buy in tournament for 3,000 chips. Usually 100 players. Late reg is 2 hours. Tournament normally lasts 5 hours. 1st prize is $170. Do you think it is better to buy 9000 chips for $10.50 and cash 3 times as often? Or buy 3000 chips for $3.50 and have 3 times the amount of opportunities to cash.

Extra 6000 chips is an advantage at the start, but halfway into tournament average stack is about 50,000 and your 6,000 chips for $7 seems a waste.

In my opinion, it is best to get as many chips a reasonably possible via rebuy/addon, though I don't personally rebuy if I get knocked out. So for most tournaments I see one sites, that mean paying the initial buyin, an immediate rebuy (so you start with double stack) and if you make it to the addon option at the first break, the addon.

There is clearly an advantage to playing with more chips. whether that advantage is worth the extra cost is something I haven't extensively looked into, nor do I have a large enough sample size to definitively say, but anecdotally I would say that it is worth it.

And your are right that the value of an individual chop depreciates as the game goes on. That's why I take the rebuy immediately and only take the addon if it adds a significant percentage to my stack (Which it does 95% of the time)

I think this really depends on what you think your advantage is over the rest of the field. I don't ever start off rebuying. I prefer to see how people are playing. 9x out of 10 they are playing so loose and it is so easy to get their chips that it is like rebuying.

I don't rebuy, but for starting players can be good.

I always add on when possible but only if it makes sense with how much it costs and how many chips you get. I do rebuy in some tourneys if the prize pool is large and it doesn't cost a lot to get back in, but I would never rebuy towards the end of the rebuy period as stacks start to get large by then and there isn't any sense in rebuying only to be short stacked.

Thank you for this measured response. You addressed all my points relevantly, our thinking is very similar in this area.

Yes, in the earliest stages of rebuy tournament you encounter many fish, who will go all in with almost anything, because they know they have a rebuy opportunity, and often you can chip up to the max rebuy level quite quickly.

I don't think doubling your stack at the start doubles your equity. 'the mathematics of poker ' by chen + ankenman has rigorous analysis of rebuy formulas and includes ' the theory of doubling up '. read it if you like a challenge ! they say 'rebuying at par should be done with care '.

the question comes down to your tourney equity, if the additional rebuy and or addon are ev positive then you should do it

and if you believe you have an edge you should rebuy the first hand to max your chip stack for early play against the fish

if I lose all the rebuy chips do not. I do rebuy only in exceptional cases. if the loss of the stack at the beginning of the tournament at small Blyde and if a large prize pool. But if the entry is for me to do is not expensive

Yes, but how do we figure whether or not it is EV+. That's what the post is about :)

I never take advantage of the rebuy to buy more chips. The add on on the other hand depends on the situation and if allows me any extra maneuverability which it often will. As someone else stated a larger chip stack is an obvious benefit but is a double rebuy worth it for 3x the cost? For me the answer is no. Plenty of opportunities present themselves while the weaker players are still in the field.

I also seldom buy back into a tournament if I bust and I cannot buy back for at least 25 BB.

I never rebuy if I bust out. It's a waste IMO.

rebuy tourneys and long 'late entry' boosts the prizepool and the rake , of course . ( the poker sites think that these elevated numbers are attractive to the customers ). I think the pros and maniacs/gamblers/impatient types love them , but the rest of us in the middle are overwhelmed .

in early stages of a tournament as a rule a lot more weak players ready are easy to leave the counters and to take away from them to the maximum it is necessary to have the stack as much as possible on it I for rebay

Is not recommended for beginners make the rebuy because the chance of you destroy your bankroll is very large. I only recommend rebuy if you are sure it has an edge over your opponents and not on tilt.

I think it's much to rebuy tournaments.
Best rebuy tournament is a tournament in the FPP points, they do not mind to give))
