Hey Everyone,

I joined the site last night and was going to start posting on the forums for some advice, but did not get the chance last night. So I have been playing a lot of micro .01/.02 cash games and SNGs at party poker as they have a scratch card promotion that gives you a dollar or two once in a while. I managed to turn my $1 into $20, down to $1 (from tilt from my one bad hand... tilt is the only thing as far as I know that is preventing me from building a bankroll lol) and back up to $8. A few years ago a played a lot of hands at $1/$2 cash tables and seemed to have less variance and easier time at those stakes than the micros due to the amount of people who will stack in micros chasing that gutshot straight and seemingly hitting it on me so i do have experience against higher stakes players but this was years ago.

So they have a 2nd scratch card promotion, that if you get 5 points through generating rake throughout the week you get a bigger prize. This for me was a $220 ticket to the $200,000 gaurenteed tournament. I am quite pumped about this.

The tournament is 5000 starting chips, with blind levels at 20 minutes. This is much much different than any other tournament I have been in terms of starting chips, and a much bigger increase in blind changes.

So for me, it am thinking it means I can be a bit more patience on waiting on good hands in good position rather than having to shove half the tournament.

Has anyone had any experience in these types of tournaments, I am guessing the player pool with be under 500, and I am also guessing the players will be much much better than the majority I encounter now. So what are some main things i need to be aware of or some key advice you may have?

So I ended my day early lol. I didn't have very good card luck, although I had AA and KK twice, with my KK lost to AQ both times, the last being for my tournament life when I got it all-in preflop with 20BB left against AQ with the turn hitting an ace.

The first time I raised preflop to the blinds and they both called, an ace hit the flop, so the SB bet and the BB called immediately, they both ended up with AQ. I folded immediately on the flop did not lose much as i was in late position and did not have to act first, it was just unfortunate.

My pocket aces hit a flop with two nines and some lower cards, not a great flop as it was a late position raise when the blinds were still 20/40 lol, so with the bet sizing I did not win too many chips as I wasn't three-bet preflop and it turned out my opponent had JJ and he seemed hesitant on that hand, which is understandable with it being early. however I feel if it was a bit later i could have won a good chunk there as he had an overpair.

One I called a raise from a really aggressive player raising a large amount of hands (they earlier lost 10k chips on a bluff with 7,9 suited and no pair just a busted flush draw lol). I had QK suited, hit my queen and a flush draw and he was short stacked so i put him all in and he had KK and i missed my outs. I ended up loosing about 30% of my chips on that hand. The other good chunk i lost was when i had KK and lost with my allin.

Other than that i was mainly blinded out, I got a few low pocket pairs that are usually good for a few chips if in a good position, but they were always UTG so it was hard to play those (7s and under). and with the blind structure i choose to fold and wait for better, which i did in my kings lol.

Also it would seem anytime I got decent cards worth a raise in late position I had people raising utg or from early position... and not the lose players i got the tight ones raising.

I was fairly happy with my play, it's hard when you don't see barley any pairs or AK/AQ or suited connectors, or anything really. most of my cards were unsuited ace rags, or unsuits 9/4, 4/7 etc lol... Oh well. Back to my .01/.02 lol

Play with a lot of patience in the lower levels. Try to play with good hands and position as the manual says. Even at levels starts hold the low pot and only increase the considerable way bets if Nuts. Be calm.

With time and the rising blinds its position in the game can vary greatly then play tight in the beginning not to get tight in high blinds.

Strategy for a higher buyin deepstack

I read your post and I think you are correct you should be VERY patient as there is a lot of playing involved. A tournament like that is going to take at least 8-12 hours to finish and ive won many many high stake mtts that took between 8-19 hours to finish including the sunday million.

You should be very patient in the beginning playing premiums while having positions and if your gonna enter a pot enter with a raise DO NOT LIMP. Play a tight aggressive game play premium cards and when you hit the flop play them hard.

Once you get to the bubble open your game up a little as this is when you can steal from the medium to small stacks as they will be waiting for a hand they can shove with. Then when the bubble bursts back to tight aggressive. If you happen to make the Final Table open up again but make sure you have some kind of decent hand as every decision costs you money at a final table GOOD LUCK

Try to avoid situations where you it requires you to go all in pre flop. You need to aim to keep pots smaller when you are in marginal situations and play bigger pots when you are convinced that you have the winning hand.

With KK for example, if someone reraises you pre flop instead of 3 betting just call and see what the flop brings. The chances are that your opponent will be holding an ace or maybe even pocket aces so if an ace hits the flop play with extra caution.

Alot of your big money players are not scared to play risky because a 100 or 1000 game is like your one or 5 dollar game so dont be risky in large amount games very chancy!!! they will go allin with 40 or 50% chance when in reality you probably wouldnt.
