I watched recently the wsop 2011, 2012 and 2013 coverages and almost every poker pro (Negreanu, Mizrachi, Tran and many others) called post flop on flop, turn and river, almost never raised. And also preflop, even with monsters like QQ i saw calls (to disguise the strength against 5 opponents lol ?!), what happens here ? Are live poker players calling stations, even the pros ? Maybe they don´t have enough chips in tourneys for raises ?

When I started playing live I was stunned at the number of limpers and callers - and it wasn't just the fish doing it. It took me a while to break the stigma I had gotten from playing online - do not limp and rarely call.

There can be a lot of value in limping and flat calling playing live. You can see a lot of flops in the early blinds. And when you do raise you had better be prepared for at least 1 caller. And if you raise limpers at least half of them will still call. It is not just bad players either calling your raise either.

I find playing live that a lot of players wont fold until they see a flop. So all you need to do is develop a good post flop game.

I agree with Debi,I do see alot of limpers trying to trap in live tournament poker.
I myself will try to trap big hands post flop if I know my opponent will try to fire at the pot.
It is A stradegy that will certainly pay off sometimes but can get you into alot of trouble at others.
Just be familer of your position and your opponents at the table who are still in the hand.
As always I am trying to optimize my winnings and pot size obv.

The reason you may see a lot of pros playing a wide range of hands is because they are very well skilled at post-flop play.

I didn´t just mean the pre flop play, i see them calling down (or check calling) to the river...and rarely see any raises post flop

in a tournament with a big numer of entries, you should play more hands in the early stages of the tournament with speculative hands 910s 10js etc..., cause it cost a small amounts of chips to win a big pot , some pro develop this strategy with premium hands : if they raise preflop they will scare players or they will call and they will fold on the flop , so the best strategy is to slowplay those hands and to be more carefull on the flop.

Daniel72, you usually see them playing like this on late stages or just early?
this kind of tournaments they have so much chips in the beginning and they are so good post flop that they can get huge profit playing like this

Thank you,for your post .I've always heard you should play tight to begin with when the blinds don't mean as much and play looser as the tourney goes along I've tried to stick to this formula but it doesn't seem like you can build a chip stack fast enough, and I've always thought why wouldn't you try to get in while it's cheaper in the early rounds then go tighter when the blinds are higher which makes more sense to me anyway.

Yea - it happens post flop too but with less frequency. It really depends on the table too.

Keep in mind that top players like the ones named have a greater skill set than the vast majority of players. Among other things, this means they can better afford to lose chips because they're better at recovering.

Plus the tournaments they play tend to be deepstacked, even more so than online deep stack MTTs. So it costs a smaller portion of your stack to play speculative hands.

Do pros play like this to make it more difficult for opponents to put them on a range?

TAG style is said to be best for playing in the micros but I would think that after a while you're essentially playing with your cards face up when playing against people with tons of experience (once they figure out what you're doing.)

OK, i can understand calling decent bet preflop just to see a flop, it kinda make sense, but calling to the river with nothing seems to be very common as well and i must agree with you pal, a lot of "poker pros" do that epecially online and i don't know whats the deal about that...They bluff on the river a lot, i bet they try to scare someone with their poker pro title

Remember that the hands you see on TV are selected by the show's producers. They want hands that are entertaining, so they look for hands where players took unusual lines, made key bluffs, hero-called, etc.
