Joining a tournament online is much easier than joining a live one, except for the simple matter of eye strain. One thing that you always need when you play at an online tournament, though, is focus. It’s easy to get distracted by the other things you can do. You can play a game, watch TV, browse the web – the distractions can be overwhelming. This is what you need to prepare yourself for. Make sure that your focus is on the game by putting your PC at a quiet, well-ventilated, and private spot inside the house. This ensures that comfort will not be an issue. Also, prepare your snacks, drinks, and other things you may need before you start playing. This way, you won’t need to leave your chair too often and you will lessen the risk of losing your concentration on the game.

In live tournaments, I like to get to the casino early, and then just walk around and focus on the task at hand. I give myself a mental pep talk and make sure i'm relaxed and ready for the long haul.
for online play, i turn off all distrations, and that's about it. haha.

I agree with this completely, don't enroll for multiple games either and just pay careful attention to the table and the other players, don't call huge raises or all ins if more than 2 or 3 players commit and just stay confident and calm no matter what.

I usually put on a good movie so that i dont get too crazy in the tourney an play too many dumb small hands, but after reading crazy angel's post that explains why i get eliminated shortly after the bubble, and the movie ends. :)

I put a lot of music on my ear ;)...and after that I try to focus on my opponents, live or online....Music calms me down very quickly. It makes me also relax.

OK - I don't play high stakes stuff but for live tournaments like our Pub Poker League final I spent a lot of time watching videos to see how good players dealt with the requirements of time (patience) position (not playing in the wrong position) and chips (do not waste chasing under 30% chances).
Sure odd bets do come off sometimes but most tournament play is tight with loose players able to be identified and noted. Also in live tournaments there are usually a few drinkers and those with obvious tells - in other words it requires focus at all times even early in tournament.
Watch especially for the player who shows their cards when they pulls off a bluff - they will catch people by playing good hands the same way soon after so this style can be noted.

Online I just shut the door, turn off the phone, ignore my wife (the hardest part), and concentrate remembering early that the tournament will take 4 hrs so not waste chips early when not with the winning hand.

Oh - I'm partially deaf so my wife does not expect me to respond unless it is something really important.;)
