Hi all, I am new and I have a question.

I have just returned from a friendly home tournament (we usually play a cash game but decided we didn't have enough players).

we had four players and said we would have a prize for the winner (75%) and second place (25%).

at the final hand, the three remaining players all went "all in".

the chip leader won. one player said there was no second place, just joint third. The other said that the second place went to the person with most chips at the start of the hand.

Does anyone know the correct answer? They both seem to make sense. At one point someone said it would go by dint of where you were sitting - so if on the first hand everyone went all in with identical stacks, and one player won - the second, third and fourth spots would be awarded just by where you were sitting - this seems very odd.

Does anyone know the real answer.

Thanks
Jack

2nd place is the player who had more chips at the start of the hand.

Real men settle this with a bare-knuckle boxing match.

It depends on what's said in the set of rules the tournament organizers have created or chosen to use. While placing the larger chip stack 2nd would be what I'd expect to see, there is nothing universal that says every tournament has to run this way.

In this instance, given that nothing was agreed in advance, neither player is right or wrong.

From Roberts Rules of Poker:
"If multiple players go broke on the same hand, the player starting the hand with the larger amount of chips finishes in the higher place for prize money and any other award."

However, I gotta go with Arj once again - if you didn't agree before to abide by some set of rules then I would have to say do what is in the best interest of the game (home games = harmony) and let 2nd and 3rd chop.

As Arj alluded to - about the only rule universal to all tournaments is a full house beats a flush. :D

The other said that the second place went to the person with most chips at the start of the hand.

At one point someone said it would go by dint of where you were sitting - so

2nd place is the player who had more chips at the start of the hand.

From Roberts Rules of Poker:
"If multiple players go broke on the same hand, the player starting the hand with the larger amount of chips finishes in the higher place for prize money and any other award."

Standard ruling is highest amount of chips at start of hand,

additionaly (interesting in regards to your other point) if equal in chips then it is awarded to the player nearest to the left of the dealer.
The logic being they were more disadvantaged positionally than the other equal stack when the hand started.

but otherwise 2nd place is the player who had more chips at the start of the hand, even if its only one chip more.

Imagine that the main pot would be composed of players 1, 2, and 3; and then the side pot will only be composed of players 1 and 2...

The main pot is distributed first...assume that player 1 wins with the best hand. Player 3 is eliminated at THIS point, as they have no chips left and no stake in the side pot.

Then the side pot is distributed between player 1 and player 2. Player 1 has the best hand and wins, and after this player 2 has lost...

Player 3 would've finished 3rd, player 2 in 2nd, and player 1 in 1st. Of course house rules could be different, but in tournament play that would be how it would work
