Does anyone abandon much of the advice given by the leading Poker Tournament books? Do you find the strategies so consistent and dictating everyone's play making the players so readable or do you find the advise effective.

I don't think books make players predictable. It's the opposite. Good books will teach you all the stuff that you have to consider to make your decisions.. they are not recipes, they dont tell you how to play and what to do, they teach you how to think and be profitable on the long run.

A good poker book will teach you how to think during a hand. How to rate your players, how to bet. My favorite are 'Winning poker tournaments' by Rizen,Apestyles,Pearljammer.
They tell you what their thinking during a hand. They have different styles with opinions about the hands.

If you're just playing what the book told you, you're not being a Poker player in my opinion. Poker books are supposed to supplement your thought process, not to dictate the way you should play. Your own judgement, your own analysis, your own experience must dictate your game and your game plan.

On the note of books, I've read a lots of poker books, yes that includes many that people might suggest, but the best books that I've come across are:
1. The Theory of Poker (David Sklansky)
2. The Mathematics of Poker (Bill Chen & Jerrod Ankenman)

These two books help you to think in a logical fashion.

That's true and whether playing for income or entertainment I would encourage every player to develop an ability to make decisions independent of a books guidelines.

That said reading books will expose you to ways of thinking that you might not currently possess, and more often then not the more you're applying the things you read, the more successful your winnings.

Most good poker books stress being unpredictable and the ability to switch gears. I think Harrington is the best and even though I've read and gotten great information from others, I'm really glad I read him early as I feel he gives such a good grounding for tournament play.

bstest... a common misperception about 'poker books'... and one that is quite common amongst players who haven't actually read many (any?)... or at least haven't read many (any) good ones.

Great response here by Gnikace! A decent author will provide material to the reader to help build their own thinking process.

You really can't go wrong by picking up a few poker books.

Poker is constantly changing. When you find a good book, it may become obsolete.

You are halfway right, but in this books you can find such basics as value betting, starting hands, playing with position and without position, odds etc. So nevertheless good poker books are very necessary, particularly for new players[emoji4]

Books do not give the only true recipe for victory, they show how much to think in which direction to think. Jonathan Little Secrets of professional tournament poker is an interesting book.

the problem of the book is that it is outdated very fast .. the game of poker has been evolving a lot, and forms that were played 2 years ago are not used, I believe that the logic, mathematics does help a lot .. since this does not change. But more strategies are outdated.

I believe that all study and welcome, but as they spoke the poker played 2 years ago is not the same as the one played these days the strategies and the way that certain situations are played also, but to have a solid foundation and to evolve as time is passing is fundamental not only in poker but in everything in life

Well, there are not only books that dictate everyone's play, you probably talking about books that learn people so-called ABC poker, and yea these are very limited to one strategy, you should check out Ed Miller's books for more comprehensive ideas.

Your English is fine.
No, I don't have any information about that. I usually go for hard-copies, makes it easier for me to read.

Sorry for replying so late, didn't check the thread until someone else updated a post.:)
