If you based your decision on the information you gave us (including what you just added) - yeah you did something wrong - you didn't take enough into consideration before making the decision. But that's part of learning poker.
Really, just based on this - lets assume I just moved to this table and know nothing about what's going on - probably a call.
Let me ask a personal question - under what circumstances would you have folded JJ in that scenario? Any?
I think you are going to get a pretty equal amount of yes and no to whether you should have called but the real answer is going to require going beyond the cards and chips of that particular hand. I honestly don't know what I would have done, but it would have had as much to do with my experience with the player as anything. How was he playing, what was he playing? Can I put him on a range with that bet? What's my image? Does he think I will call or is he pretty much counting on me to be tight? Do I even want to involve myself in a race at this point? Am I just wanting to money or go deep? On and on....
