Is it against the rules for me to play an online tournament with a friend of mine while I chat with him on skype?

Yes, absolutely. You would be able to give each other information and would be called colluding. Play in different tournaments, not the same one.

It depends on the poker App. But for most Apps it should be fine. If you are not sure, just ask the support. I asked on pokerstars because I was curious about that and they responded, that as long as you are the one taking decisions, it is fine. Sharing your account will be probably prohibited on most of the poker sites, but as long as you are the one playing and making decisions it should be fine.

Not according to pokerstars, as long as you are the one playing and making decisions. There are for example few videos of Daniel Negreanu chatting about the hands with some players playing on pokerstars.

I would play with friends, but unfortunately I have a few friends who love poker!

I think that if you play in a mtt tournament and have come to findce in final tables I do not think it is something to agree, they can talk and turn that into a rivalry to see who is the best playing poker, depends on the honesty of the players

End the skype call and ship the tourney hopefully:D. the chance of both of you being on the same table for any length of time is relatively small, but sharing your pocket holdings with each other would be a no no imo.
