Play chips are not really an accurate assessment of what play will be like when playing for real money (even in the micros). The play is vastly different as you won't have as many people playing any 2 cards preflop, chasing draws, or defending their blinds nearly as often. Play chips are decent for fun, but not really much beyond that.

I started with play chips when i was new cause i just enjoyed playing poker. After a while when i thought i was good enough i made a deposit and never looked back. It's really your choice what you want to play. It is better to play for some stake cause players will put more effort into it and play a little more realistic.

If you're a fish and you're learning to play I think it's okay if you start with virtual money tournaments.
But when you play with real money you will see that there is a big difference in how your emotions affect the way you play.

Sometimes play money is all that is available, I am in the US so the only way for me to play at pokerstars is with play chips or Cardschat home games. It is good play at times and not so good at other times.

In my experience, the play is drastically different as you move up in limits from play money. The more a player has at stake, the better fold equity your bets have.
Play money - It is a joke and really only useful if you want to see a lot of hands. There are lots of multi-way flops and it's extremely difficult to get people to fold.
Microstakes / low buy-in tournaments - Much better than play money. You won't see as many multi-way flops, but you'll still see quite a few 3 way flops. In addition, there is still quite a bit of limping with weak cards and LOTS of chasing flush/straight draws.
Higher stakes / higher buy-ins - This is where I love to play. I generally look for tournaments with $100 to $500 buy-ins. Play is much better. There are rarely more than 2 or 3 people going to the flop. C-bets and semi-bluffs can actually work.

play money is exactly what it sounds like...…"playing around" there is no value to tells , there is no value to running deep in the tourney . at least with a micro limit tourney you have value per hand and the end result is some sort of cash value. Never understood people who like to play 3 hour tourneys with play money

I think if there is no interest in the game,then the game itself becomes not interesting.what purpose do you pursue in the game?probably win, do not earn a lot of money,and can win the tournament and hit the jackpot).so say the right play is always fun,and fellowship you will not be offended.

I used to play poker with play money, and still do sometimes.
If you play 500k + buy in tourney its good as at that level the players are good but at 5k -10k not worth it.
Now I have started playing free rolls and the initial stage of the tournament is like play money, until you reach deep thats where seriousness steps in.

playing with fictitious money always hurts my head. people rarely play normally. Motivation surely counts for a lot of people. 0 Dollards.micro limit is a good way to play longer and not lose your stack too quickly.

I am convinced that you need to play poker only for real money. If you do not have money then you can always play at least in freerolls. Virtual money only to allow the new player to get acquainted with the platform's functionalities.
