I play small live tournaments as online is illegal for me where I live.

So I have been going into these tournaments and try to paint a picture as a NIT till the first two breaks. I play super tight and try to make sure my great cards show. I will back down and check if I feel I am pushing my opponent out before the river and take a chance on loosing a small hand to do it. If I get an unexpected fold I will even flip my cards. I make comments sometimes about other people's cards and say things like "Wow, you've got big balls" or "How do you keep your nerve opening with 88?"

Anyhow, after I have painted a picture for the first part of the game. I start looking for places to make moves with good cards or even crap cards if the situation is right. I find that I tend to get a lot of limpers later in the game when I am on the button who will fold if I come in and 3bet and will usually take down more than normal pots preflop than most. As the game progresses I stay fairly tight but get super aggressive until I start to see that my ruse has worn off. Some nights not so much, but others I run into people who are good and know when to put the breaks on me. By the time it is down to 4 or 5 players the image doesn't matter anyhow as everyone is playing great poker usually.

I tend to go in after the second break with one of the shorter stacks or at least mid stacked depending on the cards, but I tend to make the final table 90% of the time with usually a mid stack.

Does anyone else do these types of things? Does anyone try to paint a loose image in the beginning and then flip it around? I have been thinking about trying that here lately.

Well... I preffer to watch my "enemies" moves before starts to play. And then act specifical against the right player. If my table are so slow, I tender to rush it out and make then to feel unconfortable. If the table become so agressive, I'll play defensive in my blinds, adopting agressive re-steal.

yep you are basically saying you want to lose out on ev by "painting a story" which you have no idea how other players will view that story or even if they care or are paying attention.

just be aware of what image you may be portraying, if the table is tight there's no sense in just folding so you can paint your tight image, raise the crap outta them and deal with your image accordingly

well in my OPINION the super tight image doesnt do what it used to. the new idea to aggressive players is that if you are tight u r WEAK meaning I can 3 bet you you'll prolly fold and if you raise then i can justify calling you with 98 off using implied odds especially if they have ak aq. to fight this you must make huge bets to potect your hand and sometimes its just better to win without seeing the flop.

There may be some confusion as to what is getting you to the final table - is it "painting a picture" and using perceptions and psychology or is it just playing tight in the beginning and opening up as the tournament progresses? I am pretty sure you are going to get the same results by just dropping the charade and playing that way. In fact probably better, as I cannot begin to express how bad this is: "try to make sure my great cards show. I will back down and check if I feel I am pushing my opponent out before the river and take a chance on loosing a small hand to do it. If I get an unexpected fold I will even flip my cards."
You are working too hard to sell your early image - just play tight/aggressive and it will sell itself (and you may just go to final table as a chip leader).

what happens if most of the people your presenting that image to get there table moved or some of them bust out, then you have to build a new repor and table image with new people. why not just play your style game all the way through from start to finish. better then playing cat and mouse

Basically, it sounds like exactly what BLITZ said, you're getting to the final table by playing tight early and opening up. That said, good information for the NIT in me about what to do, though I'd have to find out which hands to play and such.

well I must put in practice your reading at the table unfortunately there are many amateur players so you have to take care of yourself and take advantage of this
