the standard pre flop raising amount is 3xbb as far as I am aware anyway, should this change to more when ante's come into play since there is more in the pot?

I think it varies with your strategy. Since the blinds are bigger though I typically like to go variations of 2.5, mostly a little less.

yeah varies with playing style and how deep you are. Early stages Ill raise more just cause your are getting so many more callers with standard 3x raise. But as tournament gets deeper I will raise 2.5-3x. if antes are in play 2.5x works

Thanks for the feedback, so both you guys are saying you raise less when ante's come in, is that because the blinds are higher and opponents will be committing a higher percentage of their stack to call? I thought that since ante's were in play there is more in the pot so the big blind in particular is more likely to call a smaller raise since he will be getting very good odds on a call.

I can't speak for anyone else but the reason's, I believe ppl raise less when blinds are higher aren't because of A) The opponents will be committing a higher percentage of their stacks but more to do with you committing a higher percentage of your stack, and thus making it easier for you to call there A.I play if the need were to arise with a medium strength hand...B) If you raise more pre, this in turn actually makes it easier for you to get bluffed more per-say when the pot is bloated, and more then likely get put to a real test if you were attempting a move..C) Makes it more easier to read you per-say, (EG), You raise 3x Every time you get a hand (Playable), and only limp when you have a medium hand, or raise more when you have AA/KK/QQ types and 3x when you have AK/AQs, types of hands...

I thought that since ante's were in play there is more in the pot so the big blind in particular is more likely to call a smaller raise since he will be getting very good odds on a call.

Your right there is more in the pot, but 1st is that when raising you must see what type of player your raising...Is he/she a calling station, what type of player is this? There stack sizes? Can my raise really scare them off, do they defend there blinds? There's many questions you must ask yourself, Do they think about my image? Last but not least the buy-in, the blind speeds, also come into factor...Once you answered these questions, then realize that when blinds are 1-k-2k with a 200 antes, and you raise 2.5X, that's still good enough, and makes it easier to let go of, if they shove on top of your raise, also makes the C-Bet post flop more controllable...

Like I said I can't speak for other's but only myself hope this helps

when the antes kick in , part of a good strategy includes blind stealing to maintain your stack size and building your stack.
Depending on the oponents a 2-2.5 x raise will generally acheive the same effect as a 3x raise when deep , thus saving chips if our oponent jams the pot and we must fold, it also keeps the pot smaller when villain 3bets and we call.

Most tourneys as antes start - I'm not playing chips voluntarily without a real strong hand. If you have a strong hand you shouldnt play it so that you can "get away from it"... bet more like 5x BB to let them know your serious - if you get a comedian with 22 etc... you just have to ram it up their but with your qq, jj , kk, aa...If they hit the set it want your day. that being said - if flop is very obviously not going your way 3 suited... you can stil get away from it and have 40% to 60% of your stack left. These days you just can't afford to play weak hands timid - foldem and play premiums stong as hell. If you think you can steal blinds you still need to represent AA, KK ,QQ so y play it differently? We all get premiums 90% of the tournys we play if your patient enough. I start playing them more aggressively when the antes start. If you can get 2 double ups in the post ante range your cashing with mediocre play from there. If you go bust - so what - they wont always lose.

So are you saying you only play strong hands and nothing else? How can you play being so damn tight? Who would even call you, when you do raise?

If you have a strong hand you shouldnt play it so that you can "get away from it"... bet more like 5x BB to let them know your serious -

So if we get AA, we bet like 5X, so they all know we have a strong and (This is btw, after you were being sooooooooooooo damn tight all game long, and Someone will just call us, because they think we're bluffing, after not raising anything for a long period of time?

you just have to ram it up their but with your qq, jj , kk, aa...If they hit the set it want your day.

Once again, "Ram it up their", If we "Ram it up there", we potentially risk losing a massive pot, or end up winning a smallish pot pre, and by potentially risk I mean, since know one would call a ridiculous raise size from a tight player without a real hand, common sense leads 1 to think you'd only win a small pot, maybe I'm wrong?

if flop is very obviously not going your way 3 suited... you can stil get away from it and have 40% to 60% of your stack left.

By these figures I'm assuming you raise half your stack size pre flop?

These days you just can't afford to play weak hands timid - foldem and play premiums stong as hell. If you think you can steal blinds you still need to represent AA, KK ,QQ so y play it differently?

The reason for playing AA and a bluff differently is because when (and it will happen), you do end up getting caught you don't want to be stuck into calling because of pot odds, that's why smaller raise would be better because smaller raise=smaller C-Bets=More attempts to steal and take it down post flop, Just my rational is all?

We all get premiums 90% of the tournys we play if your patient enough.

I Just don't understand where you came up with those figures

The size of your opener only matters to the extent that it affects how your opponents play. So, against opponents who don't notice whether you open for 2x, 2.5x, 3x or more, you can use any of these, and jump around. You can also do this vs people who notice but don't change their play. And even against people who do adapt as long as you change your bet sizing randomly.

In theory, you should have to open larger when there are antes because of pot odds, but in practice, especially in small buyin games, you don't have to do so because of the don't notice / don't adapt factor plus the effect of having a slimmer stack to pot ratio as noted above.
