Why some players open raise more than 3x in the middle stages of a tournament? The vast majority of them are weak players but I have noticed that move from some fairly good opponents.

The other day an opponent has as his standard open raise amount ~6x multiplier!!!![Of course I was playing in a freeroll].

Are they totally ignorant about nowadays sizings?

Especially in a freeroll, players simply do not care. If they like their hand or want to charge more for hands that are strong but vulnerable (say, TT or JJ) they're going to raise to whatever they want.

The good thing for us as solid players is that we can exploit this by jamming over their opens at wider stack depths with stronger hands, and I've had people stack KJo against my AKs for 22BBs in EP. Just wait for strong hands and punish them for it, as they'll feel commited after putting so much of their stack in the middle and stack off with less than marginal hands at times. It is annoying though, because we have to play tighter as a result and there isn't a lot of room to manuever at the 30BB or even 40BB stack depths, where we should normally be able to call with speculative hands like suited connectors or small pocket pairs, but since the SPR is reduced by such large preflop raises it's better to stick strictly to stronger holdings and punish them when we flop something strong.

3 betting light, when the villain do this move many times, it means that his opponents are playing very tight passives and he believe that win the pot the most of times.

Why do weak players do it?
To protect their better hands, like AA, KK, etc, they just don't know what to do on the flop or don't want to deal with the post-flop.

Why do better players do it?
To get paid. They know that the game/table is filled with weak players who wont fold even bad hands and they want to maximize their better hands.

It depends on the mtt if it is a deep mtt no problem to open 3x or 2x5 pre flop quiet in my opinion.

In poker, an isolation play is usually a raise designed to encourage one or more players to fold, specifically for the purpose of making the hand a one-on-one contest with a specific opponent

imo that the key words. If he wants to open with a big size and play huge pots - why not, he can do it. The most important thing is not a size, it's the constant usage of the same size in this given stage, so that it doesn't give away your range at all.
And I believe the size of OR is somewhat dependent on the limits you play.

Raises are getting wild and crazy and it's what make the game great and unpredictable. This happens for a combination of reasons but in general is becoming more common. Be careful how you respond to these bets especially 3 and 4 bets.

Well it never makes sense for those players to play like that !!! I in the middle of the tournament almost always open x2 bb, but I start opening for x2 when the bb are already 100+

If someone opens for more chips then just tighten your range accordingly. If they seem to open too often and you are at 20 bbs then start shoving some low pairs and suited broadways on them that you would normally call.

You will see all sorts of crazy things in freerolls and micro/low stakes MTTs.

You can watch some higher stakes tournaments online (on Twitch) or just open the lobby and watch a few tables if you are interested in how raise sizing is used.

I tend to assume those who open-raise 3x (or more) are willing to risk more chips than they need to and play accordingly.

Good luck to you! :D

Because it's the best time to steal chips. and a phase that is near the bubble and players with fewer chips will hold the game until they reach the bubble
