I see a lot of these long late reg tournaments online and I've played in ones with short late regs (like 60 min to 2 hrs) and cashed, but see others that have 5 hours of late reg. Those latter ones that finish have times of over a day from start to finish!

How does that work? Does it run for 8 hrs or so then break for the day and resume other day? Or do people just sit and play for over a day straight?

I know live tournaments break after X amount of time for the day and can span a week but online it doesn't seem clear. I've never been in an online tournament that's lasted more than like 10 hours.

well some special tournaments may last 2 days but most of them finish in the same day it started, or at the dawn of the next day. 5 hours of late registration seems like a lot of time and i have never seen a tournament with a last registration that last so long. for example the sunday million has a late registration of 3 hours and the tournament last 12 to 13 hours straight with 5 minute breaks every 55 minutes until it finish.

Yeah I'm on Black Chip and they have mostly Rebuy tournaments. Most are 60 to 120 late regs, some 30 min ones. Some 3 hour ones, but more and more 5 hour ones. Even their million dollar gtd one today has 5 hours of late reg with unlimited rebuy. 12 hours seems reasonable , but I saw two that finished in 1 day and 14 hours and 1 day and 6 hours both had 5 hr late reg.

Actually I should add that I just saw 2 that went longer than 2 days. One was 2 days 15 hours and one was like 3 days 13 hours. And these are micro Rebuy and some micro R&A

they must be a 2 and 3 day event. otherwise these poker site wont make a tournament that last 48 or 72 hours straight. that would be insane!

I actually just asked them. They said no policy is in place, they go until they end however long it takes with 5 min breaks every 55 minutes. Which I can't believe. I mean some of them lasted 6-7 days I see!

these tournaments must be full of bots then because no human is able to be concentrated more than 24 hours straight without resting, even after 12 hours players lose the focus on the game let alone a day, two or six days straight without resting....
Also how many players are able play for 2 or 3 days straight without having to work, go to college or something?

I mean I guess there's grinders out there that this is their job so they just play and play. There's gamers out there that play for like 3 days straight WoW, LOL, Dota2, so I can see people actually doing that with online poker.

I figure maybe after what 18 hours or so the field is down so small that players can agree to either chop pots or all sit out for a few hours? But being global that's tricky. It seems these are the exception. Most I see end within 8-9 hours.

I think maybe your looking at how long the tourney has been finished. I play on black chip also and I thought the same thing...Maybe I'm wrong...

I too believe players may be mis-reading the status section as how long the tourney ran for, rather than how long it's been over. Take a look:

That's interesting, maybe that's the case then.

lol how many bb would you have if you register 5 hours later on a tournament.? 10? 5? less than 5? i dont think that joining that late to a tournament would be a good idea and its totally -ev considering your m ratio will be lower than 5 so you will have to push with a good hand and double as soon as possible because blinds will eat you up very quickly.

I wonder this too about when tournaments have long late registration. I understand registering after only a few limits change, but after a while it seems not profitable to late register.

Going back to the Million $ Sunday example: regging in level 20 after 5 hours the blinds are 500/1000 with 100 antes with a starting stack of 10,000 (10BB). Assuming you sit down in any position besides SB/BB (~78% chance), action folds to you, and you shove all-in: you wind up starting with a stack of 12,300 (if you steal) or 21,100-22,100 if you double up (depending on who calls)

I agree, buying in as late as possible in a tournament is usually -EV... I can think of some exceptions (awesome overlay, very few players, etc) but I imagine that most people who are buying in that late have accepted that variance is so high in MTT they're not really that much worse off. Would you have an easier time accepting the fact that you bought in for 10BB and missed your long-shot; or would you feel better putting in 5 hours and getting taken out by a bad beat?:pcguru:

One last thing, just food for thought... Ever heard the saying 'a chip and a chair'? Think of Jack Straus in 1982

lol - Yes when it says "Finished" it means how long ago the tournament ended not how long the tournament ran.

To be 100% sure just open up a done tournament and look at the time then close the window come back a couple minutes later and relook at the time. If it has changed, ya know - If it hasn't ya know!

:D

I heard the saying however most of the time a chip wont even last a single hand.... also its very important to check that the chair isnt broken lol

You're right, depending... It really depends on the denomination of the chip ;)

As for the broken chairs, I didn't realize this was such a wide-spread problem but it does explain why I see so many players on tilt

the saying has to be something like this ... all you need to sit on a poker table is a chip of great value and a comfortable and well made chair... Thats more like it.

Let me edit this on wikipedia real quick :p

Late registration can be frustrating, but it's actually in place for our benefit (not the site's). Going back to the Million $ Sunday example again, 5 hours seems like a ridiculously long time but it is the only way they can hope to get the prize-pool up to the guaranteed amount. Without late reg, there would be no million dollar tournament (where's the profit?) and even with 5 hour late reg the tourney ended up with $92,500 in overlay  (Thanks Merge!)

I do agree with you though, and wish more 'Freezeout' tourneys were offered.

Edit: I forgot to take the tourney fees into account, there were 1,815 buy-ins with $40 fee each... Still, for this single tournament they gave away $19,900
