Hi everyone I’m new to the poker scene with my playing career be about 4 weeks I’m looking for some info of new and experienced players alike as to what a good itm % is for a beginner and an insight into the most profitable poker to games to play
Let me give you some insight into my short playing career

Week1
I sighed up to PokerStars and deposited £10 which gave me $13 dollars and 7 days of rewards to play with I did pretty well my first week taking full advantage of my free rolls by getting upto 33 dollars with nothing more than basic poker and a lot of luck

Week2
Was when I started suing more attention to my poker game I when I noticed I had dropped from 33 dollars to 23 so started reading and watching how to play poker videos and learnt about position and bet sizing pot equity went over my head tho I also stopped playing the spin & go tickets which where what I won most my profit in on the free rolls and went to playing only 9 seater sit and go which where a 0.50 cent buy in and I managed to achieve a 25% itm and finished the week with $23

Week 3 was much better I took what I had learned on the web and continued playing 9 seater sit and go aswell as playing one 45 mtt a day my highest place in that week was 13 th however in the stt I achieved 1st x4 2nd x4 and 3rd x4 and achieve an itm of 37.5% but to my disappointment despite what I felt was a high itm percent I was still stuck on 23 dollars

Week 4 I decided my roi wasn’t good enough so I started playing half mtt and half stt the first 2 days where a disaster when I only finished 3rd day 3 however was somewhat better when I placed 2nd and 3rd in mtt for the first time I’d made the money and to make it better I maid it again the same day I took my buy ins back up to 28 dollars however since then I have struggled to win and make the money and am now back down to 24 dollars and am on day 5

So what I want to no is
1 what where other players starts to the game like hopefully like mine I I hope I’m doing ok
2 what games would you recommend I play for the best roi and to keep gaining experience as I have my eye on a local poker tournament
3 any idea on how I can further improve my game

With all due respect, You are so FAR off the MARK.

To expect to be a winning poker player with a few weeks in their pocket on playing this game is “ABSOLUTELY DUMBFOUNDING”

In this game of poker we have a name for individuals such as yourself, which you probably have already heard of……” FISH “

Sorry to say, but YES, you are the poster child of this term.

I will provide some very basic steps for you to consider, but have no expectation that you will ever follow them.

1] Stop Stop Stop playing poker with your own money.
2] Spend the next few months reading and watching videos on first, the basics of poker, and then gradually progress to more advanced stages of the game.
3] Practice and Play in only freerolls until your game skills and abilities improve where you can hold your own against a 6 player sit & go, then go to a 9 player sit & go, then try maybe a 45 player sit & go……. I think you get where I am going with this? ……. Slowly progress up the ladder in small sit & go tournaments before trying to play in tournaments that have a few thousand players.
4] Your question on how to improve you game……. Simple, you need to get a HUGE amount of practice behind you, I am referring to Hundreds of Thousands of hands seen and or played.

Poker is a game that they say is a life-long learning experience, so it would be extremely foolish for someone to think that they can be successful with just a few weeks of playing.

Actually I really was trying to help you in not losing more of your hard earned money by playing in a game that you are just learning
If you object in someone trying to recommend a safer way for you to get into this great game, then so be it. and good luck with it.

So first of all a warm welcome to this funny forum. He was right and he wasn't.As you mentioned all the important stuff it looks like you know already how to spot a fish and survive at the tables.
On pokerstars I recommend the bounty KO tournaments. They start from 0,55$ and with a few kicked out the fun can start...

Welcome to cardschat! Tommyc9494
Your post has a lot of info, shows a lot of enthousiasm, but also fluctuations.
Rather than only providing honest and quite sound advice, NBB thought it useful to put you in a box. I don't agree with NBB's assessment of you as a player, but I do agree it seems your enthousiasm may become expensive, the poker advice of NBB tries to prevent you from the expenses.

Please search the forum, you'll find lots of info on:
- game selection
- what to study
- bank roll management

p.s. I have no relationship to cc, or NBB; I'm just another member

fyi: I'm building a bankroll playing freerolls, for me: the minimum bankroll before playing with buy-in is 100-200$ (the 0.0x$ jackpotfreerolls excluded)

I'm playing freerolls of 1) cardschat 2) unibet and 3) 888poker bankrollmobs, in order of profitablilty for me, in $/hour.
I don't like rebuy MTT's (freerolls), to me they seem mainly usefull for the room.

Hi mate thanks for the message I couldn’t seem to find the game you where talking about but I’ll have a good look soon I wouldn’t class my self as a fish because I’m no longer clueless iv watched the pokerstar series and am going to watch it again as I am bound to of missed some basic play iv also read a little on pokerolagy about poker math and I plan to dive deeper again soon

Ndd I understand where your coming from but I read on this very site that play money games give you bad habits and I can believe it as I only played a couple of days and now I do love to make a coin toss call which I would consider a leak of mine I try to play a tight aggressive game and only really call with 7,8 suites and up I maybe mix it up when I reach itm or if my stack is getting low as it stands still up on my winnings and yes iv had a bad week but I’m still at about 20% itm which means even you surly can’t argue I’m doing something wrong and as for my lack of hands played iv already played about 150 games with about 25 hands a game that takes me to just under 4 k hands played that’s the beauty of the internet bud

Not sure if you cant find one of the freerolls I mentioned.
For the cardschat one: they are on various sites, ps, 8p, pp, acr, and more.
Some require only membership, others a number of posts (25+), the best I found require active contributions to the forum and some80 posts, after which you can request membership of the freeroll club.

I've played some play-money games and I fully agree: I found play-money games useless.
Sadly, you'll also find many freeroll players calling anything that is either suited or connected, irrespective their stack or position.

I afraid I don't know if 20% itm is good or bad, but it also depends the game.
My humble opinion is that I should play games <0.5% of bankroll buy-in, irrespective the %itm. When the %itm goes up, so should the bankroll and I can move to higher stakes.

I started Q4 last year.
I'm still playing freerolls (bankroll < 100$).

I forgot to mention: in the cc 'freeroll club' freerolls we get really good opponents;
- the bad news: they remove our chips
- the good news: excellent for training
other good news: usually there are only few hundred players at start with some 15% itm.

I thought I best post a little update of how I’m doing iv now been playing for 6 weeks and in my first month I achieved a 29.67 itm raiting which I hope ok for my first month for week 5 I stated playing bigger tournaments and higher stake stt dropping down if I was playing bad and managed to get an average 28.1 for me
However I’m now on day 6 of week 6 and am on course to achieve a 40 percent itm raiting for this week

So keep your fingers crossed for me card chatters and hopefully you will see me on a pro table soon jokes

Hey. This bankroll is catastrophically small for any game. The only suitable game for such a bankroll is MTSNG 45max NL Hold'em $0.25. $ 25 = 100bi. Then earn $80 (40bi) for NL2 Hold'em. I think that with this approach, the risk is minimal. Never play with a small bankroll. Even the best players can fall into the streak of failure. ROI... I can only say about the HU SNG. 52-55% of ITM is good. The more tournaments are played, the less your ROI, this is normal. Somewhere I found this table for the HU SNG, but I can not say that this table is 100% accurate. I played 3,500 HU SNG tournaments, and ROI is slightly less than listed in the table.

You aren't doing half bad. You haven't gone broke and you continue to learn. One has to watch the ROI and percentage because it's completely different.
First off the percentage ITM is not a true marker of how well you are playing. You can reach a min cash but is it going to cover your other loses. So if you play 3 games with a $1.00 entry fee and you only "cash" ITM once you have a 33% win rate but if it is a min cash, say like $1.75, then you are still down $1.25. This is very important in sit-n-go. You have to have a very high percentage or always claim first. A 30% ITM for sit-n-go is bad. You'll have to get it closer to 75-80%
ROI- will give you a better snapshot of your winning. I separate my large buy-ins (>$100) from my smaller buy-ins (<$100). I have a 25% ITM win rate in both. BUT my ROI is 148% in the large buy-ins vs. 96% in smaller buy-ins. Same result ITM but since I min cash in smaller buy-ins then I have lost money.
The moral of the story is you should always be aiming for top tier money. 1-3 in MTT and 1st in STT.

my way of working out whether I'm doing well in STT's is to count the amount of tournaments I've played that day and divide my total winnings by this number. If the result is more than the buy in I've had a good day. but never expect good days every day. do it for a month and then work out an average.

LoL,

Your ITM and ROI mean nothing after a month

If your ITM is 37% you aren't going to win much over the long haul. Its too high. You aren't playing aggressive enough. I'm ITM 16% of the time and have a 33% ROI over 2500 tournaments. That is an accurate gauge of my ability because of the sample size. Less than 500 tournaments I don't even think you can look at the numbers and learn anything.

My suggestion would be to get HUD. It will make a dramatic impact in your play especially if you are a beginner. I suggest PokerTracker 4, it is a very simple and there are a number of tutorials.

Hi everyone these responses are great this is exactly what I was hoping for when I maid this can someone please give me a little insight into poker tracker and how it works also as my short tournament history of about 250 games my itm raiting is only a ruff estimate as I can’t count the variance in my game yet but I have definitely experienced one I must however confess to you all I have overlooked my roi completely so as off today I’ll start monitoring that more also to address the issue I’m my small bank roll I’m getting a payment in the next couple of weeks and I’m going to deposit the £43 A’s it’s not a round some with that on the end to play more comfortably at the 0.50 level it’s weird really I do ok in 6 seater and 9 seater tables and the 0.55 run tournaments but in the 45seat mtt and the same for the 90 I seem to struggle I can say for sure tho that my roi will be negative at this point as I do spend more than I earn but everyone’s gotta learn and considering I only started playing 2 months ago I feel I’m doing ok
