This is our Forum Challenge Discussion for week 3 in Feb. Please feel free to participate in this thread - even if you are not completing the challenge.

Read this article and then discuss it:
MTT Strategy

My favorite line from this article is this:

"You can't win a multi-table tournament in the first few levels, but you sure can lose it."

How does your playing style differ from the Strategy Summary Chart in the article?

Can not agree on some points. Most MTT palyers have very bad deep stack playstyles (beginning of mtt basicaly) with wish not to lose BBs you fold EV good hands like 89s or overplay A9o. Being to nitty in the begining will cause you to be dead for most of the tourney and leave you short stacked to fast and than what? push/fold? you are going to be iin that stage no matter what 90% of the time + with that strategy you can just late reg in the last 10 mins and have a tea for the fiorst 2 hours =) + you will not have to endoure you AAA on the flop being 2-outed on the river... for 100bbs =)

The article I liked. My favorite part, the Tournament is a marathon, not a sprint. You can't win a multi-table tournament in the first few levels.I try to play as written in article, but game in deep stacks almost there is no.

Article is 100% right in they way it descirbes all sections. Gives a basic breakdown on stages of MTT. Very good for beginners.
"You can't win a multi-table tournament in the first few levels, but you sure can lose it."
This is something that I have been saying to myself for years.
I have different strategy for different tournies. I sometimes go hard out gate and play loads of hands looking for big stack early. Sometimes I play patient early wait for good hands. Sometimes I just skip the early stages and just buyin close to when registration closes.
Middle stages depends on table and stack size. Mostly patient but if opponents are tight or if I have a boatload of chips I get loose and aggro.

When approaching bubble I apply apressure sometimes even with a small stack. After bubble there is the bust out bonanza with short stacks pushing relatively light. Great spot to pick up some chips if you can make a hand. During latter stages of tourney I always keep an eye on pay jump spots. Sometimes I will throw away marginal hands or spots if I can fold and take a pay jump. Sometimes I will run time bank here to see if someone busts so I can play a maringal spot.

the MTT tournaments are the poker variant that has the most competition should be taken into account some points, always apply a strategy according to your opponent, you must always look at your STACK, your position and also our STACK, play with position in this type of tournament is very important, however your tactics or your game mode always have to change according to the instances of the tournament you are in, as you advance the tournament (beginning of the tournament, final table, and the bubble moment) the maneuvers to develop will be totally different .... As the tournament progresses we have to be more selective with our cards, and we have to be very careful when making a bluff because sometimes it is not profitable in final instances, the most advisable is not doing it

Everything is right. Especially if you are a beginner, you shouldn't depart from these recommendations. I think with small stack it is necessary to go all in with any ace

One of the proven strategies that i used in MTT is bet after 3 and 4 level, i do not know why but the good cards appear with more frequencies and the chances of you win increases

The biggest takeaway from me reading this excellent article for beginners to understand MTT strategy is your game. Notice how the style changes dramatically from the early levels, to the mid levels, to the play up to the bubble, and then through to the final table. Being predictable at poker is a death sentence, and those that are successful are great at playing a hand four totally different ways at four different times.

Patience is a big key too - no need wasting chips if you aren't serious about the hand. But I do like the idea of playing speculative hands early - removing them later keeps your opponents guessing as to your range, but allows that early double up against a premium hand that they can't let go.

is this to get information from our game? lol :p

I usually follow the same line throughout the tournament, trying to win the largest amount of chips in the initial levels, because there are many players who play all their chips with air.in the bubble I do not play much and once it breaks I try to do the same as at the beginning of the tournament, try to collect as many chips as possible.I do not have much pascience so in the final stage I play really bad unless I have a big stack.

interesting article, I liked it a lot since I love and play mtts

My strategy if I reach the final table and 3 or 4 handed, I play a little more
aggressive. because in this instance the jumps in prizes are bigger and many players prefer to enter the heads up.

My favorite line from this article is this:´

The last thing you need to do is start frittering away chunks of what's left of your stack chasing flushes or straights, or making bad bluffs.

This is a good article for a beginner player who is just starting his way in tournament poker. I would also like to add that for beginners it is necessary to pay attention to the structure of the tournament - ordinary or turbo (hyper-turbo). Since beginners usually play very cautiously and tightly, it's better for them to play slowly, so it's better to start with ordinary, slow tournaments.

I will emphasize on a the attitude to win an MTT Focus on players range, be Patient and do not try anhy bluff before reaching the last two table and most of all pay attentions to your blinds and try to keep them around 25BB

I think the most difficult is the bubble. When you have good hand but still can lose all your stack to bigger stack.
Or to play aggressive against short-stacks also. Short stacks have not much options: to call or fold. So after 2-3 calls you can become short-stack yourself. Or if they fold you can increase your stack fast.

An interesting and usefull summary for mtt. It has the things you have to do for reaching the money and the final table. One the other hand I would like to see more advices for the characteristic moments when things do not come as we wanted!

This article is solid advice for a winning approach to MTT's. Stack size is assumed to be average in the beginning (naturally), and different strategies are given for big and small stacks at the later stages (Bubble and ITM). However, in the "Tournament Middle 30-60BB", it is simply assumed that the reader has an average stack. An increase in selective aggression is due here if one has a large stack, while a narrow range high aggression approach should be the short stack's thinking.

How quick the blinds go up should also be a big point in considerating how to play your starting hands. The most important part of the tournament is survival and not putting yourself in a position where you unnecessarily risk your chips in bad position, so tightening up and playing for situations, such as no raisers into the pot when you are in the blinds or on the button, is more important than the cards you are dealt. Even pocket aces does not go up well multihanded because the chance to lose increases with every person added to the pot. So in staying alive in tournament poker, look for situations over looking for cards

This article reminded me of the fact of not reaching a final table of a good tournament when I was 3rd in chips with only 12 players and finished in the 10th position. I say it reminds me of the tournament because I have something to work on in my game to improve it, and it is the fact that I am more aggressive when I have a good hand to defend and avoid a straight or color in a stage like the one I mentioned in the tournament. I think something that we like most is the phrase says: A tournament is a marathon, not a sprint. And I think it goes with my style of play of the tournaments, but I admit that I was very tight a few months ago playing tournaments. Now I think I'm adapting my style a little more like what this article says. This is very interesting and I will surely learn how to improve my aggressive game when necessary.

I do not agree at all until Stage 4! You should never be short stacked in stage 3! Do best before to not to be in that situation, or you will leave with small money and a headache! Take care your stack is always above average and do the necessary things to do!

Yesterday when I left I saw you were holding moire than 25BB what was the outcome I watched you playing and chatting with a German player .Friday Cards Chat Freeroll was a tough time for me and I had not Lady Luck on my side got busted in Middle stage with a pair of Jacks after I went all in preflop with my 8 BB from CO I will find a way to win CC players next game I will widden my range and focus on position and defensive play.I 100% aggree with you most important thing in Middle and late stage is to pay attention to our stacks and keep it around 20-25BB till final table.

I usually stick to the same line throughout the whole tournament, trying to win the largest number of chips at lower levels, because there are many players who play all their chips with air.I don't play a lot in a bubble, and once it breaks, I try to do the same as at the beginning of the tournament, try to collect as many chips as possible.I don't have a lot of pascience so, in the final stage I play really bad if I have a big stack. It's all about me. One to one.

The mtt multi article is for the most part, true and great for everyone to read. Depending on the type of tournys played , i pretty much follow those guidelines,Getting a good read on other players at the table can often save you chips ,mostly when you know which players may jam all-in playin agg,but also can gain you a big stack . The biggest part in any mtt game is the ability to have alot of Patience and with that comes wins.
