For those who have played live tournaments with multiple entry options, do you have a preference as to when you start? There is one coming up near me with 4 options: Friday and Saturday at 1 PM or 6 PM.

The first option which makes the most sense to me would be Friday at 1. Playing earlier in the day is always nice, and I will probably be eager to play, meaning the sooner the better.

But I guess I'm mostly wondering if anyone thinks the difficulty of the field would change based on time/day.

The Fri 1pm will be largely grinders and have a very low turnout. The grinders that spend multiple bullets will play then so that they can grind the cash games on Fri nite and Sat if they bag a decent stack. They will also take more risks to build their stack since they've already planned to fire multiple times.

Fri 6pm will have a few more rec runners but even then 6pm is a bit too early for some players to get there after work.

Sat 1pm will be the most runners with the most rec players

Sat 6pm will be a bit more than Fri 6pm, most recs don't want to play late into Sat nite and have less than 12hrs before coming back on Sun.

Pretty much everything jilly said

More recs on the Saturday flights. Probably the best chance to play if you only want to fire one bullet.

Also last flights people usually play a bit tighter as there are no more flights to get into.

Unfortunately, I do not have so much free time, so I play only in tournaments that last no more than 3-4 hours. But I think it would be interesting to take part in such a multi-series tournament for a few days.

If the casino is 2 to 3 hours away like Thunder Valley in Sacramento is for me, I would go play Friday and drive back home afterwards then go back for day 2 on Sunday. Then I would save money on hotels. If I drove there Saturday and played many hours to qualify I wouldn't want to drive back Saturday night and then return Sunday morning. Playing Friday gives you a day in between to go home.

If you are nearby or plan to stay overnight anyway then do a friday night satellite, assuming they run a mega. The Saturday 1pm field will have more rec players and more satellite winners from Friday night.

If deciding between Friday at 1 or 6 do the 6pm because the good players from 1pm will still be fighting it out in their flight and the 6pm will get the 1pm bustouts already in a bad mood.

Same with deciding between Saturday at 1 or 6, but the 6pm flight might go late like 3 am and maybe day 2 on Sunday begins at noon so you would want more rest.

I think some of the differences in answers here highlights how it's actually largely dependent on you and what you care about. Figure out what matters most to you, then adjust your approach accordingly.

For me, I like to do a reasonable mix of trying to figure out what the softest fields might be (and agree with the sentiment that it will largely be closest to day 2, particularly if the first day 1 is a weekday). And then also what is most convenient to me (see Joe's answer regarding driving).

This generally translates into me playing better. But for you it could be different. I like days off, but I've known guys who VASTLY prefer jumping straight into day 2 with as little delay as possible, so they enter the last possible Day 1 flight. Or some people will have many bullets allotted, so they will want to fire earlier to give them the most chances at Day 2.

The last thing I'll mention is price. If we are talking about a multi-day $1k buyin, that's going to be very different from a multi-day $200 buyin. If it's at that lower end of the live spectrum, you're going to see VERY soft fields regardless of which day you play. If you're playing bigger, like a $1k or perhaps bigger, the field softness may matter more depending on which day you play.

But just figure out what matters to you and plan accordingly.
