I have a friend who intends to play these things (stakes 0.55-3.3$). This is kind of my fault since he knows I am doing well enough even though my focus is on cash games and I play tourneys only on the side when I have a good reason.

I plan to give him some advice but variance in MTTs is pretty big and I want to teach him solid BRM from the start.

How many BI should he have in order to survive variance in the start, assuming he is a marginal winner?

Bonus question: What is considered a decent win rate/ROI?

This should be posted on Tournament Forum not on cash forum.

200Bi´s (100 if is ok to deposit again if bust))
ROI 20-50%, probably higher on lower levels

theirs no like exact amount, but you can run bad for a while, assuming he is playing the optimal style, you wanna go for a minimum of 100 buy in's to dertermine his skill factor he can then crush that level or move up.

If he is adding extra to his game like he knows all the equilibrian factors and strong positional play their is no reason he cant keep moving up to $2.50 $4.00
as the fields are still very weak at mtt level

i dont think br management really matters at micro levels mtts.
he needs less than 100bi if he plays tourneys with small fields, maybe just over 50bi will do

Sorry for the wrong forum, this is kind of my primary forum here and I just didn't think... my bad. Grinding all day didn't help either :(

Thanks for the answers, I will recommend him to go with 100 BI, he is playing relatively small fields (40-150 players) and he seems to be around break even right now. Hopefully with my advice I can move him towards being a winner :)

According to sharkscope my own ROI is 31.5% (1.487 tournaments) but I suspect this includes some highly profitable satellites that I abused when they were available (FTP miscalculated there badly :D) and I played like 150 of those...

HAHA roi 10-20% for MTT micro you guys seriously , this is very bad ROI and you need a lot of work on the game

Enough 200-300 bi for MTT micro buy-ins, ROI will bi 200-300%..

Ya I concur with horizon, lower the buyin the higher the potential ROI for a good player. --- Any positive ROI is not bad though, it is very relative. --- In the medium fields mid to low range buyin I would aspire for at least a 35-40% long term ROI.
Also AFS (Avg Field Size) Has a LOT to do with your potential ROI; and how many buyins you need.
Granted the smaller the stakes the easier it is to maintain a solid ROI and have a higher ITM % which as many seem to not notice is WAY WAY WAY WAY less important than ROI.
