Hi All,
While I consider myself well schooled in No Limit Holdem - I am quite new to Fixed Limit games.
The betting strategy just seems to escape me for some reason :)
I would truly appreciate any tips this group might be able to offer as I am playing in a tournament quite soon.
Thanks in advance,
JB

Great place to start is in the article section. There is a very good article on limit play there.

The hardest part of limit games for me is not being able to bully flush and straight draws out of pots. The odds are going to be there for them to chase. You just need to make them pay to see cards.

I don't know that the odds are there for a straight draw. Maybe an open ended one with overcards, or if the pot was very large, for example after the turn.

edit: ignore my previous edit, wrong post.

You tend to see more multiperson pots in limit games. You get three people in the pot and the odds are close to being there for the drawing hands.

3/6 game for example:

You have 4 callers ($12) pot and you are on the nut flush draw AK suited.

A person bets out 3 and gets one caller and now it is to you. $3 into an $18 pot is the right odds for you to call. Everyone else folds (3 people left) and the turn is a blank (pot is now $21).

First to go fires out $6 (pot is now $27). Even if the other person doen't call the odds are close to there for you to call here.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it can happen more in limit when the bets are predetermined amounts and more people will see a flop.

i think howard lederer said in NL you are looking to pick up extra pots as much as you can, and in limit you are looking to pick up extra bets..

although i only slightly understand what he means, like betting your edges or whatever?

He means that in limit the goal is to make sure you get the max out of every hand you win. You can't go all-in and double up so the difference between good and great limit players is to maximize the hands you win.

examples:
1)Do you call or reraise on the river? If you think you have the best hand, you reraise to get that one extra bet.
2)Are you able to get a round capped when you have the nuts or do you somehow get only one bet in.
3)Can you check/reraise to get more money in the pot or do you fire out and just get a call.

These are completely different in NL than limit. The suttle things are what happen in limit that maxize your hand winnings.

Thank you all for the tips :)
Took your advice and did a lot of reading - think the time was well spent.
While I didn't win - I did manage to cash in 9th place out of 150.:D
Great community you all have here.
I look forward to meeting all of you at a table some day.
Thanks again,
JB

I broke free from the shackles of limit. It turned me into a very angry young man. I went cold turkey back in December, and I haven't looked back. I love no-limit ring games on Stars now. They keep Elvis in beer money.
