Live Tournament: Too Agressive Too Soon?
I'm new to the forum. Just wanted input on a hand tonight.
I'm no new to poker, just been away from it for a few years. I entered a $40 tourney at a local casino in AZ, with a single $10 add on at the first break. I figured it was a cheap way to get back into tournament play. I'm a decent player, can hold my own. My first tourney back and I get busted out in 15 minutes. Thing is, I feel I made the right move. I'll just describe and hope for useful input.
I folded several hands initially. Got AK once and raised pre-flop, didn't hit, got bet into hard, and folded. So far nothing earth shattering.
Finally I get JQ off in mid position, call, get a small raise, and call. 3-way flop comes up 4-9-10 with no flush threat. I check my straight draw, check, check, free card.
Turn comes up 4-9-10-K, no flush. No hesitation with nut straight, I check hoping to get a bite.
Next player bets about 25% of his stack. I'm putting him on K, maybe even two pair, or at least I'm hoping so I can get paid off. Worst case it's a split.
I thought the size of his bet justified a push, so push I did. He called without blinkkng, so I'm thinkin okay he's got JQ too. Oh well.
I turn over my straight, he turns over 9-10. I didn't put him on a middle two pair, but who cares, I'm about to double up.
The river comes 9. Crap. I'm busted out.
I didn't say anything. I just left. A couple of others sympathized, and that's fine.
So, my question is not about odds
. Those were crystal clear. It was a bad beat. It's not whether or not a check-raise was the right move. I'm pretty sure it was. The Guy Clearly Made A Chump Move And Got lucky. Fine.
My question is, did I get too aggressive too early? 15 minutes? Seems inexcusable. Never went out that early when I used to play. Not a great way to re-enter the field, but it was cheap, so no real loss.
I intended to play in survival mode and make it to the rebuy. I just saw what seemed like too good an opportunity.
Input? Did I push way too early, or was the situation clearly worthy of it?
