Hi great site, i came across it while searching for a answer to a question regarding a tournament, and have enjoyed reading many of the threads.

The question was regarding a form of verbal string betting, if you say raise then wait a full minute before saying how much, would this be viewed as gamesmanship or poor etiquette, as the raiser has time to gauge the reaction to his statement to raise. The actual chain of events was..... "I raise" a minute pondering then "all in". What are your thoughts ??

I dont really think theres too much wrong here.. etiquette wise might be better to think first than say raise.. but its not like the typical string bet where ud start puttin a certain amount in than throw more when u see reaction

Not a string bet and will be allowed. If someone really hates it they will call clock on you. And yeah, it will irritate someone.

Yes i agree, for someone wanting to gain information (who cares not for etiquette) could use it to discover the same info as a string bet though.
When i raised it it caused a heated discussion, it was in my opinion done without
any ulterior motive, but it just seemed wrong and i said so.

Well I've done it (not on purpose) and I just apologize and tell them math is not my strong suit and I am not too swift doing calculations in my head.
Although I would guess it would be difficult for fish and donks to understand sincethey are probably at the level of "what's the big deal? A raise is a raise."

Nothing wrong with it, as long as they don't take the piss deciding.

+1

Announcing first is actually proper. The amount, especially at certain times, is paramount.

Xtra time is fine. If it gets crazy, call a clock.

I tend to agree that there is nothing wrong here. I see no difference between making the verbal announcement of "raise", then taking a minute before announcing the amount and taking a minute or more to consider the action in front of you before announcing "raise" followed immediately by the amount. I have seen many players verbally announce "raise", then take some time to consider the amount. They may be Hollywooding, pretending to consider the proper amount, to induce the desired action from their opponent. It seems they would have given the matter all of the necessary consideration before announcing "raise", which would lead me to assume that it is gamesmanship. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion.
