I see quite a bit of players seem to do this. First off, in general is late regging tournaments a good idea? i always thought it was a bad idea b/c if even i'm late regging a tournament thats 30 minutes... then well i miss out on the early blind levels in case I could double up.

However, I read that lot of people mention early levels are useless because everyone usually plays very tight so nothing pretty much happens. I heard that if you play a tight game, then playing in the early levels is pretty useless. But if you play loose, then its different because you could build a stack early on. I agree with the loose part, but isn't playing tight pretty good as well because there are bad players that would spew or play big pots with not so good hands early on and you can double up on them?

I also heard late registering helps out with hourly. That makes sense assuming you late reg a tournament 1 hour later, well the same player who is playing tight could just have the same size stack or similar as you. However, how late is too late for late registration? I assume most of you would late reg all the way till 50bb or so and anything less than that is not worth it? What about for turbo mtt? I would say you should never late reg a turbo mtt right? Or 15 minutes late reg at the worst?

However what about those players who are very good short-mid stackers? Wouldn't players like that enter with 20bb and thats still fine? Issue with this though is they coming in with 20bb whereas many others have 50bb plus stacks.

However for those really deep stack tournaments where you start 250bb or more... would you say the early levels is a waste of time since nothing much pretty happens? I know there are some tournaments that start out with 500bb which is of course ridiculous. So when do pots really start mattering then? I would say 100bb? Assuming 2 competent players... no one is going to play a 500bb pot without a huge monster.

Would like if someone can give quick summary on this for late registration.

I feel like "however" is your favorite word! :p

Honestly I love late registration. Not only does it give me the opportunity to come in to a tournament if I am late but it also creates an opportunity for other bad players to come in late with a small stack size related to the blinds...

It doesn't matter what player you are, starting from the beginning is always better because you see more hands. But, for whatever reason I do better when I register late...

I am an aggressive player and I take advantage of passive play, so maybe that's why..but I remember seeing a Venetian tournament where many Pros waited to register late on purpose just because the tournament allowed it....they reg'd late and took advantage of the advantage.

Late Reg is good.

Depends on tourney obviously and blind levels

Example buying in when bb is 200 u have 15 bbs u need to be racing straight away

If you are registered you are late then you have little time and you vidish fewer hands . You eats BB. a card is not good. What is the advantage. I do not understand - explain.

I know on pokerstars in The "big" series of tourneys where you have a 2 hour late reg window and 10 - 12 minute blind levels , you can get into the tourney 1.5 hours late an still have a decent chip stack 3000 chips to the average round that time only be 5500, so you do miss out on alot of the dead money but you save yourself the headache trying to put those players on hands.

On 15 minutes blinds I think Late Registration was open about 2 or 3 hours. So, you can gets in after 2 hours of tournament.. Why to play this 2 hours?

Well, in these tournaments is clear. I play mainly in those tournaments where the blinds rostut 5-10 minutes and give a stack of 1500 chips. So I ask this question.

Ive actually joined a late registration 30 minutes and within 3 hands, I was tournament LEADER, I finished 3rd in that tournament, bummer, point is, late registration for me works cause it gets rid of all the "all-in" donks, and if you can join when the blinds are 25/50. You can become a leader very very quickly!

I remain unconvinced. That you will not say, but I feel better when I start the game on time. I'm playing very tight so any extra hand gives me +.

Some players (like myself) are more comfortable playing with >20 bb than others are. Blinds + antes = bigger pots and late reg can get you up top because of these levels. Coming in late basically skips through the "pointless" levels and I say that with extreme (sarcasm? is the right word?).

You can build a stack from early on or just as easily bust. coming in late allows you to skip 4-5 hours of the grind to win 1-2 pots and be where you could have been with less effort.

Also stacks are more at risk coming in late, so you're able to 3bet shove your 20bb stack and attack the middle stacks.

I would only recommend coming in late for tourneys you can afford.

I always am shocked by the amount of people that late register and re-buy. To me, I want to get the most bang for my buck, so I look for tournaments with good guaranteed prize pools, and I would never register late or re-buy. In some turbo tournaments online, I sometimes see people re-buying even after half the field has been knocked out at least once already. If the chip stacks started at 2000, you could be rebuying for 2000 when everyone else has an average stack of 3000. That is crazy!

I had one case but it is an exception to my rule. I registered for the PokerStars Turbo tournament with a $ 1.35 Bain delayed by 30 minutes, was attended by more than 3,000 players. I picked more or less a good map and threw everything on the table.I finished the game with 1 spot with $ 758 prize. But it does not say that the late registration is good. Just my luck with the cards and the game. It was my only game in this tournament.

If my English is bad then I'm sorry. I use Google translator.

Myself, I like to start right at the beginning because you never know who is going to give away there stack at the start, where the majority of weak players will be. Especially in the micros, set mining in the early stages against a bad player gives you a good chance to double early and in mtt's I want all the chances to double up that I can. And they typically just rebuy again so you get lucky and get another chance to stack them well that's just the best..

I like late registration and try to register almost at the end.Because the game has less players and a chance to win increases

My personal opinion is that you shouldn't miss any hands in a tournament, but a lot of people like registering late because the first few levels aren't very important, and they wanna avoid spots where a big pot would occur when the blinds are so small. I never do that though, i think it's a mistake to miss any hands.

The average chip count is basically an irrelevant number really i think too many people focus on that, especially online where it's always readily available to be seen. It's really not important at all.

Agreed, especially if you play tight early on.

If your strategy is play late registration it's ok, but don't play late registration because you are late.

I am also on the fence on late registration. I like to be in the tourney from the start because I like to learn everything I can about the other players, but depending on the tourney, a lot of people play reckless and either build a stack or get knocked out. The ones who have built a stack usually shut it down and start playing conservatively (so your early reads can be useless if they are either not there or have switched gears). These guys will also use position and situation poker to their advantage when they see a small stack coming to the table, someone with no read on them, they usually try to bully you and you are at a disadvantage unless you catch cards early and can fight back. With that said, I seem to do well when I do come into a tournament when I come in during the late early rounds (4th-6th) IDK if that is because I catch cards early, or I come in ready to fight for chips or if I play a small stack extremely well (I have a lot of practice at it haha). So, there are advantages and disadvantages, I would do it 50/50 for awhile (which I'm doing for myself right now) and see what seems to work better for you. You may be a player who can come in very late and dominate and if you are, then do what works for you. The goal is always to play the way that gives you the advantage. I know a few people who love to come in during the last level of reg for any tourney simply because they don't really concentrate on the early levels to play their best poker, either because the tables are too wild and they wait for premium hands, or the tables are too tight and they just bully their way to decent stacks without much effort and BOOM, because they are not giving the game their full attention, they find themselves on the rail. But when they come in late, they come in with an immediate sense of urgency and will have a laser like focus on the game. So, again I say, find what works for you through trial and error. Good Luck
